ICV - Idle Control Valve Alternative
#1

I just had my intake off for some other stuff and while I was in there I thought I would replace the ICV after working thru Flash's issues with his and that mine now has 100k on it. I didn't want to pay the price for the 968 ICV though. So having a 928 in the garage and having changed that one in the past I had a used one sitting around and thought they were similar. I compared the two and the body's where physically identical, the only difference is the diameter of the inlet and outlet on the ICV. The 968 has a inside diameter of roughly 15.5mm and the 928 17.5mm, the outer diameter 19m to 22mm, so it seemed close enough for a match. To adapt to the different size I used a piece of 19mm silicone hose which fit perfectly and some new hose clamps. If your want to keep the right angle on the hose pick up part 47065 from the Help aisle at the parts store, it's a GM heater hose fitting and is the perfect right angle to adapt the two different sizes. I ended up not needing for my install with the SCer setup.

Now for the real reason to make this swap.

968 ICV Valve

Bosch: 0280140536

$383 Amazon, but it hasn't been available from Bosch for a long while

$437 from Sunset Porsche (Stocked in Germany)

928 (85-86) (Every BMW Model from 1985 - 1992)

Bosch: 0280140509

$133 Amazon

$382 From Sunset Porsche

The reason for the big difference in price is the ICV in our car was only used on the 968, while the other one was used on the 928 and every BMW they made for about 7 years.

It's works perfectly in my car with the SCer, so it should work even better in the non SC cars, I think maybe it even works a little better, especially with the AC on, it returns to idle smoothly on a throttle chop.

New 928 one on the left and the original 968 on the right

This piece is optional if you want to keep the right angle

Nice find; sweet price. There's really nothing unique about idle control valves. It is a simple control loop that looks at actual engine rpm and compares it to the stored value in the DME for the observed conditions of outside temp, AC on or off, etc. If there is an error it opens the valve a bit or closes it a bit. If it is working for you, apparently the 928 ICV uses the same basic technology and close to the same effective gains, etc. to drive the motor.

Things you might look for over time are overshoot when the throttle is suddenly closed, oscillation of the rpm usually due to the gain set too high (although my stock unit does a lot of hunting as is), etc. Please report back in over time after you've seen it working under a wide variety of conditions (the GM one that I had installed on my Mazda didn't hold the rpm quite as well when really hot outside, and especially with the AC operating. I had to play with parameters a lot in the ECU to get a good streetable idle). Would be great if this turns out to be an easy plug and play.

I have seen these swapped with parts from different marques and even different shapes (straight vs 90 degree) and they seem to work OK if the pins are the same. Saab, Volvo, BMW Ford/Mazda might swap no problem. I think some have a setscrew for the minimum opening you can play with.
