Valve cover gasket job

How much time should it take a ( professional ) mechanic to replace a valve cover gasket , along with the spark plug o-rings/ gaskets ?

As long as the mechanic does not break the fuel rail or the clutch hose or the cam sensor plug



Seen them all broken once or twice

Well, these guys also build race engines for Porsches , so I hope the heck they know what they’re doing ..  but you never know , most mechanics look at a 968 and scratch their head ..

It is not a diffecult job , but as many car jobs , the valvecover bolts , even if torqued correct might be stuck ,steel to alu head , and i have seen them snap , they are not hard to remove after the cover came off , they are however special shape and different lenghts , i have a few spair ones lying around just in case off .

Off course since i had one snap off and spair lying around , it never happend again !

BTW, as I’m making notes as to what to be careful with, and reading Waylander’s post again …there is a clutch hose anyway near the valve cover ?       What the heck is it doing all the way up there ?!

Its on RHD cars only, the clutch master cylinder and fluid tank are on the LHS when standing in front of the car



On a LHD car the clutch is connected to the brake master got its fluid supply

Speaking of which I just had a similar fiasco working on my Smart in an area that none of my other stud/broken bolt tools would work. This $11 tool from Amazon saved the day. 

   

And I got a chance to use my NOS Hazet 2561 for the first time!

The job is done , they charged me one and a half hours for the job which is very reasonable  , and yes , a couple of the bolts were frozen and did brake  ( but they had enough experience with that to recommend we get a set of bolts in advance of the job ) , so all’s good now !  :clap:  

 

Well, one glitch ; they left the cruise control cable above the vanity cover , so when I picked up the car I looked at the engine ( not sure why ) and noticed that , so I “educated” them where that goes , and they promptly corrected that aesthetic faux-pas right away before I left .

Hi Guys, I was too late in the season to sell my cabrio so I'm taking it off the market until Spring. I should have time to do some jobs which don't affect the functioning of the car but aesthetically could be better.

 

One of them is the dash lights .... now that 12v dimmable LEDs are available it has become much more feasible.

More relevant to this thread is a little oil which gathers in the base of the plug hole.

 

Dan/Waylander/Olaf, now that your job has been successfully completed, could you please fill in some details .....

 

Which bolts broke .... are there just two sizes?

Olaf, was that a photo of a thread extractor?

 

I'm assuming the gasket is standard but there are probably different marks ..... recommendations?

 

I note the things to watch out for ..... so is it best to loosen the fuel rail etc?

Given I have loads of time, is there any mileage in dosing the studs with WD40 and waiting a week before starting the work?

I don’t know which specific bolts broke, I  never asked the mechanic .   Yes, I believe there are just two sizes of the bolts .

The gasket is standard and has the same part number as the 928 , which has two identical gaskets, only one of which is needed for, and fits the 968 .  The plugs o-rings / gaskets are the same for all 924,944, 928 and 968 cars.  Or so I was told..
