Torque wrench spec for cylinder head cover screws?
#1

I want to inspect the top of Variocam and replace spark plug port sealing rings, and then of course the main gasket. The manual (update 248, illus. 103-05) shows the parts. Where to find specs for re-tightening the screws for the cover when done?

Thanks

From memory, I believe it's 7ft-lbs or 10 NM. It's on page 10-7 of the workshop manual.

Another handy place to look up torque values is www.lindseyracing.com, with the caveat that Lindsey racing is mainly a 944 house, so not every torque spec listed will necessarily be applicable to the 968, including this one, since the 968's valve cover is different from the earlier models. But for what it's worth, Lindsey racing shows the same 10 nm/7 lb-ft that mbardeen pointed out.

+1 on 7 lbs. You don't want those puppies too tight or else you will be ordering a 35.00 bolt.

You will feel the bolts compress the rubber grommets then hit a "stop". Use a small ratchet to avoid over-cranking the

bolts.

Also, they are not all the same length. Lay them out on a towel or rag as you remove them so you can keep track of how they came out. Installation is reverse of removal.

You will have no trouble seeing the upper vario-cam guide pad, but the lower one will be hard to check, even with a mirror. You are looking for pitting or cracking or deep grooves in the guide pads.

Suggestion: Porsche, to my knowledge, does not publish a replacement schedule for these. Considering that the 1995 cars are almost 20years old, and you have to take take it apart to see the lower pad anyway, it's a good idea to replace the pads and cam chain with new parts "while you are in there".

What's your mileage?

Good luck.

Yes, I use Lindsey Racing's table all the time - it's so much more convenient than hunting through that irritatingly organized manual. However, be aware that the Lindsey table has a few errors in it, but I can't remember which ones offhand. They're pretty obvious by the out-of-whack relationship between the value in N-m vs. lb-ft.

Anyone who works on their 968. Anyone who cares about the specs of the 968. Heck, anyone who is even curious about the 968 needs in their possession the little booklet called Porsche 968 968CS Technical Specifications. It's part number WKD423820. I couldn't work without it. Here's a picture of the cover of mine and a random page. Note how dirty and dogeared this is. I USE this thing.

something to be aware of:

those screws bottom out. they rely on soft and supple rubber bushings under them, as well as a fresh valve cover gasket and fresh spark plug tower sealing rings, to achieve the torque spec. if your bushings are old and hard, and your other rubber stuff is old, the torque spec is useless.

I picked up an electronic copy of the Technical Specifications somewhere. As noted above, it is my go to source for specs. As I've needed them, I printed out copies of the pages and have them in plastic sleeves in my 968 binder where I can add notes such as the use of Loctite, anti-seize, etc.
