Measuring cylinder head
#1

Ive now pulled the head on my 968 all looks good at 132 k miles. Im thinking this is hopefully the first time its been off and wanted to check the dimension to confirm that before sending it to a machine shop for clean up and valve job. P 15-19 of the 1992 Porsche workshop manual I have indicates a dimension A on the exhaust side of 147 +/- 0.1 mm for a new head. The only machined measurement flat I can find is behind the 4 th exhaust port (pictured). I get 130.2 mm on this head, sense checked a few times! Overall the head measures 149.6 mm. Nothing is near 147... Im guessing the measurement flat might have moved from the 92 to my 1995 model? Any advice or updated specs appreciated. Steve

Sorry to answer my own post and bore the experts here, but Im adding a couple of pics to document this procedure as I didnt find it described properly anywhere. Thanks to michaelmount123 on Rennlist for describing cylinder head measurement on the Porsche 968 or 944 S2 head for me.

Procedure:

Use the machined flat in front of and above exhaust port 1, NOT the one behind port 4

Measure accross the head at this point using a vernier.

Measure the depth from the top of head to the flat using a depth micrometer and subtract to get the head thickness.

Porsche 968 spec for standard 1.1 mm head gasket is a measurement greater than 146.8 mm.
