Cam Timing - Problem?
#1

First, what I know about my engine. The PO had the head rebuilt. Also, I can see scribe marks where the cam crank was removed and reinstalled.

I set out to do the belts and front engine seals. I rotated the engine to bring the cam crank up to the timing mark. I then installed a flywheel lock. I checked the position of the flywheel in the little hole that is in the flywheel cover plate. There are three marks on the flywheel with the center being TDC. When I look through the hole the right most mark is close to the center with the center mark past the left of the hole.

The car runs fine and I know the PO was very meticulous. Should I be concerned about this or just put the belts back on in the same position they were in?

No problem , just a slight belt strech would do that , even with a new belt installed most of the time it is not exactly on the mark .

But the way to go is to put crankshaft in top dead center , then install flywheellock and take belts off , then adjust the camshafts slightly if needed to put them on the mark and install the new belt .

When you put flywheel lock in, flywheel marks are never correct. They are usually between center and outer marks

Thanks guys, it makes sense now. The diameter of the flywheel is so much larger than the crank gear. It takes a very large movement of the flywheel to see one tooth movement on the crank gear. I repositioned the flywheel so the center mark was in the hole and it hardly moved the crank gear. It all lines up okay. It really is a geometry problem.

I'm just so used to cars that have timing marks on the crank gear where they are dead on or you have a problem. Now I know!!

Started my reassembly and found that my new spacer sleeve for the upper balance shaft won't slide on the shaft. I cleaned up the shaft and it somewhat slides on backwards but won't slide on in the right direction. Such a simple thing but yet NOT.
