variocam service
#21

My car is finally at the shop again, part of the maintenance will be getting the Vario Cam chain and pads replaced. It has almost 130K miles on it, and I don't know if it was ever serviced as I can't find anything in the maintenance records. I guess better now than never.

Is the recommended maintenance a function of mileage or of time/age? My '92 968 has only 53,000 miles on it, but I'm finding that many things need to be done simply because of aging of parts more than wear/mileage. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Kathy,

As a function of time you should probably be thinking about rubber parts (Belts, Hoses, Seals, DMF) and Plastic Parts (HCV, Hall Sensor).

The list never seems to get shorter.

Thanks, Jay. Agree with you.....nearly everything rubber or plastic or brittle wire was replaced in my last winter attempt to help pay for my mechanic's new kitchen. (My bill that year was $3500, a lot of which was labor, since he replaced gaskets everywhere including the balance shafts, and lots of belts, hoses, seals)

I don't think the variocam has been overhauled yet....based on age, do you guys think that should that be on the list for next winter's project? (53K miles today) I already have front and rear suspension "stuff" on my list for next winter.....although after reading about Dave's visit to Garage Mahal, I may be inclined to drive cross country to see flash! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Flash, you ARE quite the gentleman! So many of you have offered to help me with things, I'm looking forward to seeing you all in Hershey!

Cheers,

Kathy
