Lower sunroof completely
#1

Hey guys,

I am a relatively new 968 coupe owner, who unfortunately had an accident 35 days after buying the car. 5 1/2 months later, I got it back.

Here's my problem. My son and I took the roof off one day for fun and sun, and now it doesn't want to latch completely in back. I'm following the manual's instructions as best I can, but the glide levers in the back are not latching into the rails.

How do I do it?

Kevin, I had this same exact problem yesterday on our Norcal 944/968 fun run. the knowledgeable folks on the run helped me fix the problem this way:

there is a manual latch retractor in the back L of the car in the trunkspace:

1. remove/peel back the left side carpet behind the wheel well

2. examine underneath, behind a circular hole in the metal there will be a hex nut. This may be covered by a black plastic shell, if so pop off the shell to expose the nut

3. turn the nut, the latches will move, find the right direction and retract them all the way down.

If you need addl help I can snap some pics for you.

cheers! and tell us about your coupe!

Lets first start with making sure you are doing the procedure properly.

The roof should be set in place fully closed and the arms should be retracted fully into their little sockets, such as when you unlatched the roof.

Turn the key the FIRST click and push the UP arrow on the sunroof switch. The arms will extend out and lock into the slots. Turn the key to the second positoin and you should have full function up and down.

Thanks Greimann.

I did check, and yes, I was doing it correctly.

Thanks, I would like some pics. I peeled back the carpet, and didn't see the hex nut or shell.

The coupe is guards red, manual tranny with LSD. 70,000 mile threshhold passed last week. In excellent conditon. All I've done to it besides having it repaired is replace the entire audio system, which has been a big help.

There's a series of micro-switches [next to the drive motor] that are used to determine the arm position. If the one that senses the arm-park position is not adjusted correctly - the mechanism may need to be manually actuated.

Also if the arms are not indexed correctly, [one appears higher than the other], one side may latch and other may not.

Was your car damaged in the left rear? If so, the s/r mechanism may need adjustment.

K, I'll try and snap some tonight when I get home. It's been really stormy out here in Norcal and I don't have a garage, so we'll see if I can get a few dry minutes.

okay so check this out, the power is out in Alameda tonight due to very high winds. Get home, browse through the house with my handy pencil flashlight. Thinking to myself, 'well the camera is battery powered, and it's not raining, so might as well take the pics and post when the power returns.'

I take the pics, and then realize that the lights inside are back on. So whaddya know, the karma from my good deed lit up the whole neighborhood! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

here's the pic of the shell. My left hand is directly behind the left rear wheel well:

another pic:

closeup of the assembly (the camera is upside down at this point)

I didn't want to take the shell off because it's a little bit loose on mine, don't want it falling off permanently.

BTW i don't know what the second nut is beside the shell (R side of the picture which is actually left since the camera is upside-down), probably a manual somethingorother, somebody else can shed light on that.

Thanks for the pics.

I found the bolt this morning, turned clock wise to maximum.

The lifting arms still do not retract enough to engage the roof.

Any other ideas gang?

There might be an issue with the slip clutch. I don't know too much about it, but here is an extract from the manual that outlines the function and adjustment.
