sunroof drain
#1

didn't want to hijack any threads but found my issue unique to the numerous sunroof drain threads out there... ive revealed the front tubes behind the driver and passenger a pillar and found that these tubes are too short to make it all the way to the hard tube that goes through the firewall... they don't look cut or anything, almost as if they've shrunken with age... they stop maybe a centimeter or so before reaching the bottom... as far as i can tell, they are connected fine at the top. anyone else have this issue? didn't know if it was common and if so, did ya'll just buy new tubes or do something macgyver-ish to fix it... thanks! going through this car one leaky seal at a time... if this is uncommon maybe i can finally contribute!

other than a new tube, i was thinking one of those graduating plastic tubes that go from a larger size to a smaller one and fit that in there... it would be tight enough to stay and doesn't need to be watertight unless the car flips over... and that would be the least of my worries at that point...

Could very well explain why people have damp footwells even after caulking everything under the sun. I didn't realize that the tubes had to go to the firewall, I thought it all just drained out by the front of the door somewhere.

I had all sorts of problems with my rear hoses. One of the flexible hoses had been pinched between the roof and the sunroof drive mechanism. I doubt that it had ever worked. What a pain to replace. I only discovered this after my sunroof seals and gears were replaced, presumably upsetting the balance of the undervers at that point.

I ended up making my own graduaded piece of flexible hose to act as the connecter. This seems to work well however, the minimum aperture was reduced slightly in the process. I must say, it still carries a lot of water so I felt comfortable with that. The old connecter was in pretty bad shape.

I checked all four drain points to make sure they work well and plan to do this regularly from now on!!

I hope this turns out well for you.

Ciao!
Peter

If they are not draining properly it may be that they are plugged. Try blowing them out with compressed air.

Chris, im assuming you mean the hard hoses through the firewall... you may be on to something there as well. wouldn't do to lengthen the hoses only to have it back up again further down the line! very well could be a combination of the two, or possibly a result of being clogged for so long...

ok so i have an update. i just went to pep boys and bought some tubing that would fit inside the hard pipes in the firewall. then i took that tubing and stuck it into some larger diameter silicone tubing i had lying around for my turbo vacuum kit and then pushed that over the stock hose that i cut to fit, since the new tubing was now further up the a pillar. only difficult part was putting the trim back on satisfactorily because of the larger diameter silicone hosing.... whew. problem fixed though! sorry, no pics... i was just so happy to have it fixed that i put it all back together without thinking...
