I need some help in diagnosing my sunroof problem. I have checked the DIY files and other posts and understand the variety of things that can go wrong, but I was hoping that after describing what is happening that someone can narrow down the issues and lead me to the right fix.



With the ignition key in the second position, the sunroof will not tilt when the switch is depressed to the open position, however the motor will whine when the switch is depressed to the close position. So I sounds like the motor is alright and the main relay is alright.



At first I thought that it might be one of the directional relays, so I pulled them and switched them around and the same problems existed, so I think I can rule them out. I used the wrench to manually open and close the sunroof, so it does not look like a gear or alignment issue.



Could it be a switch problem, either the open/close switch at the console, or the limiter switches? How can I best determine or test for this? Is there something else that I might be missing.

Sorry about your sunroof issue. I wish someone would come up with a manually operated lever from the inside

to get rid of the entire quirky mechanism. It's a real PITA. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



I've been through numerous plastic gears, but it seems like that's not your problem. Have you checked

underneath the carpet near and above the driver side rear tire? The motor and micro-switches are located there and

you might check to see that none of those tiny screws that hold things together back there have come loose

of off entirely. I'm no expert, but it's worth a look I think and it's easy to check. Best of luck.

When you say the "second" position, I assume you mean the ignition on position.

I had a similar issue and it turned out to be the drive cable - it was over retracted past one of the micro-switches. Once I reeled it back into the correct position and re-indexed the gears it worked fine.



I used to own a 924 and do miss the simplicity of the roof panel. It just had 2 latches that were also used to prop the panel open. There were no gears or m/switches to mess with.

Just like Porsche to over engineer a simple device into a nightmare. There are so many micro switches and crap that can be out of wack that only a pro can set it all correct again. "lets add some more weight and complexity" Sorry for the rant! I have done the gears on my 944.

Yes, I mean the ignition on position. Thanks for your insight. I will try and check the micro-switch/cable position. Do you know if the procedure is outlined in the service manual? Is there a DIY file on this that I have not found.

Clarks's Garage has a pretty good write up on the entire sunroof mechanism. (www.clarks-garage.com/). On the left click on the Garage Shop Manual link and the go down to the "S" section for sunroof. Three good articles.

No, unfortunately the service manual has a lot to be desired. I guess Porsche figured most would go to the dealer for such service.

I printed off the Clark's Garage write ups and prepared to diagnose the problem. After having manual reset the roof by cranking the "big nut" on the motor shaft, I thought I would try things before looking too much further. Everything is now working normal again! Is it possible (or common) that manual cranking the roof back into position can reset the micro switches or other????



I am interested to know, however I am just glad that it is working again. Anything I can (should) do to prevent the problem from occurring again ..... like the clutch torque adjustment?

I remember some time back I saw a 951 with the manual option. Not sure what it takes but I know you can do it.
