Timing belt replacement started this week after clutch overhaul completed (slave, master, pressure plate, disc, bearings). Trying to chase down an oil leak...while you're in there! Might be coming from the oil cooler, but not sure yet. drips show from the bottom of the belt tensioner, but that's the end point not the beginning!

How hard was the clutch replacement?



Good luck tracking down the leak. One common source of leaks on these engines in the balance shaft seal, for some reason primarily the rear one one the one one the passenger side of the engine. Unfortunately, it's a lot of work to change out this seal, so you should really try to be sure before you tear into it, unless you don't mind the car being inactive for awhile longer.



Before you do anything else, if you haven't done so already, I'd get in there with some spray solvent and some paper towels and very thoroughly clean every bit of the engine you can reach. With a little patience, you'll be amazed at how much of the engine you can get clean. Then maybe you can find the source of the leak. They're seldom easy to track down, unfortunately.

I didn't do the clutch replacement myself, but I don't think it's a very difficult job. Book says its a 4.5 hour and I'd say half of that is taking things apart and getting it back together. Starter has to come out, slave has to come out, etc. Nothing like a 944



Balance shaft seal is #1 on the list! Hoping it's not the oil pan gasket, but I don't think it is because it's wet higher up. driver's side of engine is dry as a bone. And it's not coming from the power steering

Timing belt done and the oil leak has been fixed. Not sure exactly what was causing the leak, but front end was resealed with the timing belt and oil cooler seals were replaced. An O-ring behind the power steering tensioner was also replaced.

I can do some things, but not this. I have a really good mechanic so i let him do what I can't.
