Interpretation of words describing noises can differ from one person to the next , so are we talking about a " thump " which to me has always meant a more muffled sound like a rubber mallet hitting something solid and with very little or no resonance following, or are we talking about a " clunk " or a " clank " which implies more of a metallic sound , like banging pots and pans ? Wheel spacers or loose brake components would produce the latter, various bushings typically cause more of a thump , as will ( unfortunately ) numerous other things Given that it's a tiptronic I was thinking a flex plate starting to wear out but that noise would come more from the front / middle of the car not the rear ..unless there's something else in the transmission or differential causing the thump .. but I'd definitely focus on mounts, axle , sway bars bushings , etc. Whether 17 vs 16 wheels make a difference to any space tolerances getting closer and causing something to touch when going over bumps or dips , I don't know but sure sounds ( no pun intended ) to be something of that nature . Just conveying my experiences with the car, as I've had about every click, clank, clunk, thump, whine , whirr, buzz , rattle, rumble , ranging from loud metallic to more muffled sounds ...


p.s. to Jay and any / all of the three Bobs I know ; no I'm not talking about the " whine " that's occasionally heard stemming from the passenger seat , nor the " buzz " the driver might experience after a few too many liquid nutrients :-)

The sound may be the key here. Odd question, but does it do it more or less frequently when the tank is full? Since 968's have plastic tanks, heat will effect them, as will internal pressure caused by fluid weight and venting.

 

Just a shot in the dark, but a possibility.

just filled it up last Sunday with the same results, thumping after 45 minutes.


same results with 1/4 tank or full tank.

The whine from the passenger seat has a distinctly unpleasant sound, like no other. Kind of a nails on the blackboard kind of irritation. 

 

Sometimes also can be heard around the house, even without mechanical devices nearby.

You've driven the same roads with the car cold and hot, right? So you can be certain cold doesn't cause thunk but hot does when driven over the same bumps? If so, it sure sounds like thermal expansion, so parts that get hot, like exhaust components, would be suspect. like failing exhaust hangers. Motor mounts.

I'm sure all is on your list. Your mechanic will have a lot of fun that day.

My $$ is on a failed transmission mount, so I'd start looking there. 

 

My second guess would have been a CV joint that has failed or has lost its grease or the grease has turned hard - - but, since the noise isn't rhythmic or likely to be heard or increase with turns...then probably no. 

 

Just jack it up (or your mechanic) and get a pry bar and move stuff around...eventually, you should figure out what's moving or hitting something it shouldn't.

Friends, just got my baby back and the problem was a broken exhaust hanger and the weight balance in the rear cab sheered off.  Got a replacement from DC auto. I want to show you the pic but I am unsure how to upload this picture. Thanks again for everyone's help.

yank that thing out and enjoy the ride.  rumour has it that those things were the nazi's way of getting gold out of germany.  there was never any real study done on those.  a couple of executives at the test drive thought the cab was a bit too unsettled in the rear, so they weighed it down.  it does get a bit more tail-happy with it out, but dropping over 40 lbs out of the extreme corner of the car does wonders for performance.

maybe.  it's so heavy, and the space is pretty tight, it might just get wedged in there and not move.  also, it would not likely change due to driving or heat.  it's about as likely to make noise as a battery.  they weigh about the same.  could happen i guess though

 

don't drop that thing on your foot.  not fun.  been there done that
