Today I got this wierd squeak noise from the rear of the car. It seems to be speed related but not to related to RPMs.

It comes and goes but it seems like the sound either goes away or changes it's pitch when applying the E-brake to the first click. So something is probably loose in there(or might it just be some adjustments?)





I'm thinking it's one of the compression springs. I changed the shoes earlier this week and one of them didn't seem to be in that good of a condition. And it sounds like it's coming from that side.

Can't do anything about it before tomorrow as I need the car to work in an hour or so.

Update: Ok, now I'm confused.



Went for a little test around the block and the queaking was there. Tried to roll forward with the handbrake on at the second click and it still squeaked. But when disengaging the handbrake again, I felt a sort of "snap" and the sound stopped. (It came back after a while)



Another thing(It's been like this since after the sound started) It seems like the handbrake needs to go 2 ckicks higher before it locks the wheels, then what it did when initially adjusting it after replacing the shoes. Either something was wrong then and is now good, or something is terribly wrong now. I'll still lift the car and try to adjust it or pull of my rotors this weekend.

If you heard a pop, it was a good chance you heard that little spring breaking. BTDT. I'd pull it apart, check all is good, replace any of those springs you didn't, and readjust the brakes. Sounds like they may be too tight.

The pop has happened twice so I doubt that spring broke. Thought I might be wrong.



And when driving to work, there wasn't a sound from the rear. I'll see how it is heading home tonight. Still though, taking off the calipers and rotors takes like 10 minutes. I'll need some new caliper bolts soon though.

Would the sound just disappear though? I drove for 30 minutes on the highway with literally no sounds and when parking it worked like is usually does.



Could it be something with the cable or control arm thing at the bottom?

sure it could disappear. right up until the brake shoe in there gets cocked sideways and jams up against the rotor, makes the devil's own racket, and then locks up and causes you to be stuck.



do not use the parking brake again until you get in there and inspect things. you may have just had a rock or something in there, or you may have a broken part..

if the shoes were dragging, then you probably broke something. take it apart and inspect it before you use the parking brake again. you won't like the result if you guess wrong. been there - towed that.

If the spring is broken, are there any ghetto ways of rigging this so I can drive the car? (Maybe just remove the whole thing on one wheel until I get new springs?)



The sound only comes from the drivers side so the other works normally.

yeah - you can just remove the shoes. then there would be no chance of them jamming up.

I'll just have a real s***ty parking brake for a while I guess. I can live with that for a week or two.

i almost never use the parking brake. the only time i use it is if i am on a hill. otherwise i just leave it in first.

It's pretty much just a bad habit for me that I use it all the time. (Only for parking though, never as an emergency brake)



Though, this problem came up after being parked on a steep hill for a few nights at my girlfriend's house.

Good news. The sping had just fallen off due to incorrect assembly.

I remember it feeling loose, but it seem alright again now.
