Rumbling rotating noise at speed at right rear wheel
#1

I suspect this condition, of long duration and gradually more pronounced, is either the carrier bearing that carried the rear hub or the CV joint. Car has 155 plus miles, and I have had no service done on the CVs. I'm planning to take it to the shop.

Tire wear? I get a lot of rumble when I get down to the wear indicators on the rear tires. sounds like a truck.

We have replaced the rear wheel bearing on the left side twice. It sounds like your description. Sebring is tough on the left rear.

I wonder if I have THE SAME problem! Last week I went for a nice long drive with the wife and at a certain moment we also heard a rumbling noise coming from the right rear wheel. It could be heard at lower speeds while driving past buildings. The rear right tire is "done" because I did not do a four wheel alignment when I had new tires installed two years ago. Live and learn...

I'm hoping that Chris' evaluation is correct. I even stopped and took the jack out and lifted the car up to spin the wheel and try and determine if it was a bearing or CV joint issue. NO noise when wheel was spinning freely... Interestingly enough, after I lowered the car back down, I was able to drive home (~40 miles) without hearing any more noise!

The wife told me that she won't go out with me again until I have NEW tires on the rear. Didn't think it was going to be THAT EASY to go ahead and get new tires! YES DEAR, as soon as possible!!!

Just rotate the tires clockwise 3 times, you'll get 6 more years out of those tires. Aren't the Dutch worse than the Scots?

A full alignment with a new set of tires is mandatory if you want to get the full life out of a new set of tires.

I only got 14K out of the rears with the alignment. Just replaced the rears. Let's see how fast I chew them up without an alignment. Should be ready for fronts by then

For the record, the tires on my '92 are in good shape. Wheel bearing seems plausible. I think I'll take it to the shop.

I have just been through all of this. I had an awful rumbling that was picked up at low speeds and first noticed only on occassions and when I was driving in traffic with the windows down. If quickly became worse until I just could not bear to drive the car.

After 3 months of diagnosis ( seems like I was the only person to experience this on the forum going by the replies I received) and waiting for parts, my symptoms were caused by badly worn crown wheel bearings. The core of the problem was the old pinion bearing issue. Whilst my pinion bearing had not failed as yet, it would have. All worn bearings are being replaced at present. Fortunately everything else is like new, so there had not been a history of poor maintenance.

My car has travelled 160k Kim's.

Ps. Love the look of flash's splitter. Could not bear to consider the costs of freight to Australia!!

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Peter

We can cut one up and send it to you in strips as a kit.

Some assembly required.

Went for a quick cruise this afternoon and the rumbling noise from the right rear wheel area is back! I can only hear it when driving 30 MPH or slower. When decelerating the noise starts when the speed is around 30. If I throw it into neutral at that speed the noise seems to ease off. I went through a round-about at a good clip and the sideways pressure seemed to make the noise dissapear for a bit. Wonder if it has something to do with suspension bushings...

The new rear tires are on order. It will be interesting to see if the noise disappears then. Sort of doubt it...

Whenever I've had a noise that came and went depending on cornering, and slightly changed when in gear vs. neutral, it was a wheel bearing.

It would make sense that it would be a wheel bearing. When I first heard the noise (the previous time I was out), I jacked the car up to check what it could be. After lowering the car down the noise was "gone" for the drive home. The repositioning of the wheel assembly may have caused there to be less pressure on the problematic part. I noticed that it started up again after I went through my favorite local hairpin curves in a somwhat "spirited" mode... Noise is most evident when driving along a cement barricade, parked cars, etc (makes sense - sound is reverberating back from those objects).

had the same noise passinger rear, some time ago. If the noise stops as you severve left to right on a straight road it is the bearing.

As the load direction changes the bearing with get into a "good" spot and the noise will stop for a second or two. Not a cheap fix, but you really don't have a choice...you need the bearing to stay together or it can lead to bigger problems.

I thought it was a bearing...

What ball park cost would I be looking at?

I will have to have this done as soon as I get back from my vacation.

Let's see... new rear tires on order, install happening (as well as a four wheel alignment) as soon as I get back. I am also thinking of getting the vario cam pads changed. Will have to get the bearing done at the same time.

$ bing $ bing $ bing

Oh well, off to Brazil tommorow, will worry about all that when I get back!

I don't have an exact cost for you, but you're not looking at a lot considering the cost of other jobs on these cars.
