Dave - be honest - the real reason you went out of your way to ask your local P-mechanic for the pricing (and asked him for a "good" deal) was so that I would go racing to the Island as soon as I get back to hand deliver your splitter that is shipping together with mine!!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rock.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Talked to him today as to what 1.5 hours labour is - he never charges me! It will be 75.00 a side. Assuming it's only one wheel you want done then around 125.00.

Got the new rear tires installed this afternoon and the noise is still there.

The tire shop that installed the tires claimed to do four wheel alignments, but as I observed them struggling through manuals and scratching their heads as to what to do, I told them to NOT do it. I will take the car on Monday to a local alignment specialist shop that was recommended to me by other Porsche owners. The tire shop did hand me a printout of where my 968 sits currently. If I can, I will scan the printout and post it here for some feedback...

I will have the car checked for a rear bearing problem and then tackle that issue.

There is a doc here that Flash has posted with 3 different setups and how to make sure it (the shop) is done properly. I have printed it and highlighted the important items for the shop that is going to do mine. I hope they don't their nose out of joint- bloody Porsche owners <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Check the parking brake assembly under the rear rotors. Some of the small parts or pads themselves can make them sounds you are describing.

Ok... got the four wheel alignment done today and for those who do NOT have a good local alignment place, GO FIND ONE NOW!!!

WOW! what a difference! The car handles great.

(I will scan the two alignment print-outs at work tomorrow and attach them here for the "experts" to scrutinize...)



The noise turned out to be the driver side rear bearing. That was wierd, because the noise sounded like it was coming from the passenger side...

With the new bearing, noise is gone.



Went for a test cruise up the Sea-to-Sky Highway this afternoon. Sunny afternoon, made for a glorious time!

Oh... have I mentioned this before... BC is "The Best Place on Earth" (that's the official motto - and the scenery i drove through this afternoon proved that it is TRUE!) <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/clap.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

This is an excellent thread, as I have just bought my third 968 and noticed this problem right from the start. The descriptions given are spot on with what I'm experiencing: Noise increases with cornering to the right... noise goes away when cornering to the left. I suspect a driver rear wheel bearing. In what I believe is probably a separate issue, there is a general whine that increases and decreases with speed in the rear - seems near the center and where the transmission is. I am going to look through the forum for further clues on that, but if anyone sees this and has an idea, please let me know.



Thanks again to all good information about the wheel bearing here. Once I have it fixed I will confirm... Because at the end of the day if we all chit chat about what's wrong and never tell what actually fixes it, there's not much of a point!

I object, go into any Scots pub and they will buy you a drink..then neep you in the bog! How do you rotate tyres 3 times when you have 7.5J's and 9J wheels. Doh!

Something for fun Sir Patrick would be to change your transmission oil to the proper weight and see if that makes a change for the better. Could be the <acronym title='previous owner'>PO</acronym> has to light of an oil in there.

Another possible source of the noise (if not the bearings) could also be the rear konis. My coupe had the same rumbling noise coming from the right rear, particularly noticeable at slower speeds when less road/wind noise to mask it. Problem had been notice in work paperwork by the previous owner too, but they never could locate the source. I recall seeing a tsb on another site ( will try to find itand post) about the rear konis internal calving possibly causing the noise. Sure enough, I just had the rear shocks replaced (the left one recently started leaking oil) and the noise is completely gone.

These are m030 rears, so don't know if would be same potential issue on no adjustable konis.
