Thermofan Switch Question.
#1

This question is primarily for California owners.  OK, I just replaced that switch.  It's the 92/102.  Now I find out many of you run the 85/93.  This would change the operating temperature considerably, and since our vehicles emissions are affected by the operating temperature of the motor.....................Hmmmm.

Have any of you noticed an increase, or trouble with, getting your vehicle smogged?  Or does the DME adjust for this difference?

Thanx, B

No discernible effect / difference in emissions results whatsoever - I've changed the thermo switches to the lower temp units on both the six speed and the tip and have had subsequent ( CA ) emissions tests on both cars without any issues .

We have the same laws and the same smog machines in NV, and mine passes just fine with the lower temp switch and a performance chip.

Thanx.  What does that performance chip get you, legitimately?

Not a lot, but smoother power delivery

Depending on the chip ( do a search for the thread on flash's chips shoot out test - in " chips and salsa" segment " I believe ) , AND in combination with the air box modification, IIRC, it was somewhere around 15 more HP . But yes, enough for a seat of the pants response feel and smoother power delivery.

I have the airbox mod, the cat-back, and the chip, and the power difference is noticeable.

But, all chips are not created equal, and (here's the kicker) not all 968's respond to the same chip the same way. I am currently running an Autothority chip that uses a lot more advance than my early 92 likes. The folks at Pelican offer a few chips for the 968 based on the stock chip that is in your DME. This is a departure from what other providers have done, which is make a single chip that works in all 968's- an assumption they made because of the car that they were testing and developing the chip on. From what I have surmised, the Autothority chip I am running belongs in a late 968, not an early production 92.

I have purchased one for my specific DME from Pelican, and when I install it this Autothority chip will be up for grabs if any of you with a 94-95 want to change out your chip.

A related issue is cam timing, but that's on another thread unrelated to cooling fan switches.

Also have a chip (RS Barn), cat-back exhaust (RS Barn) and airbox mod (Matt's modification on Flash's design) and the change is quite noticeable.  No dyno figures, but they are documented elsewhere.  Money and time well spent - car is quicker and sounds better! EmoticonCar

Don't have smog testing in the county I live in, air is so clean they don't bother testing.

Ah, intelligent, civil discourse here.  Tongue

Oh, he added the velocity stacks instead of the "rings", so I was giving him credit on the modification that you did.

lol - no rant - i've seen the stacks.  didn't know that was to what was being referred.  they should work.  as i said quite some time back, i thought about it, but didn't want to spend the time and effort, since i came up with the SC instead.  glad somebody else did.

Yes, I just picked up on an earlier post where Flash responded to someone else's question about velocity stacks. I thought I would give it a shot. I have no idea if it's better, but I do think it looks cool.

Velocity Stacks.  All I can do is flashback to Hot Rod Magazine in the 60's and all those cool dragsters that were trying to break the 'unbreakable' 200 MPH barrier!

The hardest part of the mod is cutting the opening in the hood for the stacks to protrude. But it does look cool. :-)

Well, they still use them on the intake boxes for performance motorcycles, so they should help on a larger air box. Made sense to me.
