Pulled the Radiator- need fan switch - which one?
#1

Hi There

Thanks to all who have helped out with the car this far - I've had it a month, so went 250 k to get an alarm put in and the a/c charged. Whilst in the big smoke (Dunedin, NZ) i put the car over a pit to see if i could see where the slow coolent leak was coming from - found it - the fan relay/switch on the radiator. So - once home, pulled the rad, and found a very sorry switch; no fibre washer and pretty corroded. Car temp lives just above the 8 o'clock whilst running, but will climb if sitting pretty rapidly to above 10 o'clock before the fans cut in ( it cools quickly after that back to above 8) - From what i can read on the switch I have a behr unit- with the 92/103 range - think if I'm going to change it I would like the fans to come on sooner -i do a lot of driving in hot weather and engine heats up pretty quick from cold once rolling. ( has new thermostat) so -do I go for 85/93 - want the fans to come on between 9 and 10, rather than above 10...

Drop us a line with any thoughts- I'm in NZ, so parts take a bit of time to arrive - maybe i should order 2 or 3....one for each range....

Cheers

This is the switch you need:

BTW, when you put the new one in, I'd recommend first carefully pulling off the paper washer/gasket and putting on a metal washer like in the link below. Then put the paper washer/gasket back on and install the switch. You have to be careful tightening the switch because the radiator fitting is plastic and could crack/strip if you over tighten. The added metal washer allows a little more torque to tighten the switch so it won't leak. I had an issue with it leaking and had to pull it back out and add the metal washer, no problems since.

Just as a side note about the plastic fitting. When I did mine a few months back I was also worried about tightening the new thermo switch into the rad body. I stuck my finger in the hole (be nice <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> and felt a metal nut inside that the switch actually screws into. So check ahead and see if yours is the same, if it is you may feel a little less worried when you tighten the switch.

As a side note I did get a brand new radiator about 2.5 years ago so this may also be an upgraded part.

Cheers guys!- thought the v85/93 would be a better bet -will order that+ washer - only 2+ weeks delivery to NZ!- good thing I have a spare car - though its a 54 bug - not quite as fast...

the old th/switch was only on hand-tight in the rad body.. - think the paper washer had long dissapeared!

Cheers to all
