Which brand for water pump replacement?
#1

I'm about to have my belts and water pump replaced. Does anyone have any advice on which brand water pump to get, or which to avoid?

I understand that you get what you pay for, but I've been quoted about $1000 usd for an original Porsche water pump. Looking online I can find various 'OEM supplier' brands that sell the water pump, part number 944 106 003 00, for about $450 usd

Edit: I've also just seen that the part is discontinued on sunset porsche parts. Seems an odd part to discontinue? or am I missing something

Many thanks

P.S still investigating the vibration which I mentioned in another thread. I thought it was the flex damper, so I've had a mechanic take a look but he says the flex damper is fine. Will update properly once we get to the bottom of it

There seems to be a number of opinions and experiences on here. Stock is best, but some have had good luck with Porsche brand rebuilds. There are a few on here that had disasters with cheap ones. As I recall, one cheap one seized and took out the belt. Definitely not a good situation.

I bought a Porsche rebuilt last year, from local dealer (Scottsdale Porsche), that my mechanic said looked brand new, and it was warranted by Porsche. Wasn't much more than some aftermarket brands. My dealer matches other dealers discounted prices. Ask your dealers about rebuilt prices. Had to return the old one for a core charge refund.

Thanks for the answers so far. I'd just hate to install an aftermarket one only to have it leak or fail prematurely. I can't find much information on which if any aftermarket options are more reliable.

Kaj is the price you listed is for an aftermarket water pump?

Check with them about the above part number.

Keep in mind that prices are different depending on the market. Mine was a new Porsche unit

Thanks. So I can find both LASO and GEBA built water pumps online for much less than half of what I have been quoted.

When I spoke to Porsche here in New Zealand they mentioned nothing about rebuilt units and quoted me 1400 nzd or about 1000 usd for a new pump. That's the same price my mechanic quoted me but he says he sources the parts from Germany.

So is there any reason I can't just buy a LASO or GEBA water pump online instead? Heck it would be cheaper for me to buy a rebuilt one from a dealer in the States, or even a new one if I can find one for the same price as Kaj

Have you given the part number for the rebuild unit to the local NZ Porsche dealer to have them search for it? Mine was sourced from Germany through the "classics" program. Nice thing about the part from the dealer is the warranty.  I'm pretty sure you could contact both LASO and GEBA and discuss the units with them and maybe find a better price.  Shipping from the US from a dealer has to be less that the price difference you are being quoted. That's part of the price of living in paradise!

Thanks for the clarification, so 944-106-921-AX is the part number for a rebuilt water pump? I haven't come across these numbers before.

I think getting in touch with both GEBA and LASO is a good idea. Even if it's only to get their opinion. As you say, it would be ideal to get the pump through the dealer and have the peace of mind of a warranty (if it isn't voided by being sent to my corner of the world)

Yes, the -AX part number was for the rebuilt pump kit.  Not in the PET list of parts, it's a "classic catalog" part, but your dealer should be able to research it.

Let us know what you find out from GEBA and LASO, another part source is always good to have.

The dealer was quick to reply to me, so I'm guessing they didn't want to do a whole lot of researching. 'Sorry this is not something we offer' is what they said. A bit of a let down.

IIRC, the rebuilt water pump my mechanic installed in my six speed about 12 years ago was made by LASO. Not that it translates into any kind of "guarantee" it'll be more reliable than another brand, but whatever you buy, check if it carries a full warranty ( not just for the part but the labor as well ..and if possible the labor associated with the disaster which could follow if it fails and takes out the timing belt ) . Though I suspect no manufacturer, not even if you buy a brand new water pump from Porsche will offer the " collateral damage " aspect .

We have a company here in the UK that refurbishes water pumps and has done for over 40 years

They do a rebuilt 968 pump for $120 exchange with a full lifetime warranty

I have one on my car for the last 5000 miles, so far so good

Well, it's belts and water pump season here in Nevada. Any new suggestions regarding cost or source?

All I can add is my cheap Euro Car Parts water pump, brand new at $84 has now done 8000 miles, no noise no leaks,

this part was made by a company called Circoli, the big down fall with all these things is not enough use.

drive the dam cars thats what they are for

Gates Belts, Geba / Laso Pump, and INA rollers and tensioners

not sure what the shipping cost from here would be,

This is a total bargain

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-968-W...SwgkRVUnLO

just get the conti belt swapped for a gates, less noise

The last time I had a water pump replacement, we went through three rebuilt pumps all of which started leaking upon installation. Ordered a new Porsche one from Germany. No leaks. I don't have a lot of confidence in rebuilt pumps at the moment.
