Which brand for water pump replacement?
#21

As outrageously priced as OE pumps may be, are they even still available NEW, or is everything rebuilt ( and factory certified ) ?

I got a factory rebuilt from Porsche that has performed well and as I recall the price was comparable to aftermarket. They want the core back to rebuild.

A timely thread, thanks for reviving it, overheated on Monday night and found the water pump had failed. Oddly, a quick internet search showed these prices:

[*]Pelican parts, Laso, $222.50:

[*]FCP Euro, Laso, $206.89:

[*]Parts Geek, APA/URO, $133.94:

Not sure I would want the lowest priced one, APA/URO?

Call your Porsche dealer parts department and check on their factory rebuilt ones. Mine was $224 after deducting the core charge three years ago. Factory rebuilt and warranted by Porsche.

Sunset has good prices, i find that Scottsdale will match their and is in my back yard.

My mechanic will never install a URO part on my Audi S4 or any Porsche he services. He says that they fail too often and the car ends back in the shop. While he is a friendly sort of chap, he only likes to do repairs once.

Took a members suggestion and called my Porsche dealer, they wanted $620 for rebuilt part. I saw posts on Laso and Geba and on plastic vs metal fins.

I was wondering if anyone had changed water pumps lately and had an opinion/experience.

Thx

The last water pump I replaced (not the 968), I went with metal impeller vs. the plastic kind because I read that a plastic impeller's attachment to the shaft sometimes doesn't hold up over time as well as the metal ones. No problems so far.

$620 for a rebuild from the dealer? Is that after the core charge? That's crazy! Call Jamie or Pete at Scottsdale Porsche -

Mine was from March 2016 - $224 after core return. Factory rebuilt. From Germany.

Thx

I am going to call Scottsdale but it seems strange that the GEBA rebuilt listed all over the web is exactly the $224 price that Porsche sold a rebuilt factory one for. I have a feeling that some Porsche dealers are selling the rebuilt GEBA. I found 2 Porsche dealers selling from Germany and both offered exactly the same price $620 but wouldn't supply brand name.

That's interesting. I kmow mine came in a Porsche branded box, so maybe that's where Porsche Germany was sourcing them from?

I use a very experienced Inde and he was happy with it.

Got to the bottom.

Porsche dealer confirmed that all re manufactured is Geba. Seems my dealer and another were charging $620 for the Gerba that goes for $227 all over the web. The only difference is the box it comes in, a Porsche box or a Gerba box.

Scottsdale Porsche very nice folks, they were going to have it shipped from Porsche distribution in Atlanta but it just made more sense for me to go and get the Gerba re manufactured at $227 with lifetime warranty from FCP Euro.

What did Scottsdale quote for the price? $620 for a $227 pump is a lot of money for a brand on a box.

Nice to find out how all this happens.

And nice to know i paid normal pricing for a part for Porsche :-)

Scottsdale generally quotes me prices very close to normal from elsewhere. They discounted factory front rotors for my 996 to what price OEMs were selling through web retailers. About $350 less than Porsche list, as I recall. And threw in a great 2019 large wall calendar for my garage that i see on ebay selling for $60. And they set aside for me all the "Porsche Classic Originale" books as they are released. Wrong thread for this but if you haven't seen those, they are great!

This is probably THE most outrageous brand surcharge Ive ever heard Porsche commit . I say commit because if its not criminal to do that.it should be ! Its not uncommon to slap a Porsche logo on Brembo brakes and charge 20 % more, or similar moderate price upticks on other parts, but a nearly a 300 % surcharge for simply placing something in a Porsche box ?! Arent there consumer protection laws against practices like this ? Or was Porsche recently purchased by Martin Shkreli the Pharma Bro ?

Rock Auto has the Beck/Arnley unit with metal impeller for $120.00. I wonder if it is any good?

I have used Rock for years and have had nothing but good results. Mostly truck parts but never a problem in 20 or so transactions with core returns and all.

No Joke

Were talking about the same Rock Auto? The one with literally no customer service phone number? Where you cant return a part if youve tried to install it? Where you have to argue over email - for days - about shipping charges?

Curious, I have only dealt with them once and it was a pretty simple transaction. I ordered the part, it arrived, I installed it.

I think it's important to remember that they don't make the parts, they only ship them. If a part is bad, it's not their fault. If the return is messed up and takes forever, then that is their fault.

Any advice on belts? I have not found a local supplier for the Gates belts that we all believe are the ones to use. Napa is no longer able to order the Gates cam belt. They can get the balance shaft one, but the only option they have is the Conti unit for the cam.
