Radiator Fans
#1

Can someone describe the correct operation of the radiator fans as the engine warns up? Thanks.

Have a look here , it's the same as the late style 944

http://www.clarks-ga...ual/cool-01.htm

And use search option .

Thanks. I did try the search function and couldn't find anything definitive. I also looked at Clarks and it was a bit confusing and doesn't clarify for the 968. Now I know its the same as a late 944, this is how I understand they operate for cooling:

- At 92degC the left fan operates at slow speed and continues to run until the temperature drops below 92degC

- If the thermofan switch senses a 'high temperature condition', then both fans run at high speed

Is this correct? I assume the fan 'sides' would stay the same regardless of whether the car is LHD or RHD? Thanks.

No the both should run at low speed at 92c (there ar different sender untis availble so could be at a different temp when it starts running ) . And the both should run at high .

They should always run both at the same time and same speed .

if only one runs at low speed than check the ballast resistors just under the windshield near the battery , it is in a different position in the 968 than explaind at clark's .

But system operation is the same

Everything is explained in clarks write up , you should just follow the steps , than you will find the problem .

I solved all my fan troubles this way, and I know practically zilch about the electric and electronic stuff. Worth a try!

Finally got round to using Clarks to troubleshoot my fan issues.

For the relay test when I jumper 1 and 3 and turn on the ignition I successfully trigger both fans on fast speed.

When I jumper 2 and 3 the fans run at the same (fast) speed but only for 6 to 8 seconds, then pauses for a couple of seconds and starts up again.

Any thoughts? Bad relay? Thx

Check your fan resistors. I had the same symptoms, replaced the fan resistors and the car has never cooled better.

Which fan resistors? Ballast resistor (I only have one) or the circular ones under the dash?

the connections on the 2 on the firewall near the vacuum canister are well known for getting corroded and causing issues.

Flash, sorry to be a pita but have you got a pic?

nope - sorry

lift up the heater motor cover and you'll find the two hockey pucks on the firewall on the right side of the car, assuming that a RHD car has them in the same place

Lifted the heater cover on my RHD car but cant find any hockey pucks. Here's a pic....

And another....

There are a couple of 'hockey pucks' under the dash on the drivers side. Could these be the ones?

Looks like you found them :-)

Those are them. The connections look pretty clean but I would still remove each wire and clean both sides of each connection. Then I would take a resistance measurement at each resistor and at each point on the relay socket. There is a fantastic DIY in that area of these forums that will show you exactly what to measure. My bet is that either a resistor opened up or there is a bad connection.

i assume you have an RHD car, so yes, they would be on the driver side (the right side of the car). that's pretty much where ours are

I cleaned up the connections on the resistors but no change. I measured the resistance using the DIY guide and I'm getting approx 0.2-0.3 ohms instead of the suggested 0.6-0.8ohms so I guess bad resistors? Do I get replacements from Porsche? Thx
