60K mile maintenance question
#1

I bought my '92 cab with just under 60K miles. I don't have any service history (but I did take it for a pre-purchase inspection). I'm going to have the timing belt replaced and whatever else is called for at that maintenance interval. I have read where some people recommend replacing the water pump at the same time and also balance shaft belts.

My water pump shows no signs of leaking. Should I replace it anyway? I don't even know what balance shaft belts are...

Appreciate any opinions on how far I should go beyond the standard service.

Thanks,

Greg

Balance shaft belt should be done along with the timing belt - you can source a belt kit from Pelican, Paragon or Sunset Porsche. Consensus here is to go with Gates or Porsche belts, avoid Contitech. Water pump might need replacing due to age, if it's original.

My take on it would be to replace the pump, they can be had for 140.00 USD. Mine blew at 78K and I'm sure you will be well into that before it's time to change your belts for the second time. While it's all apart is the time as the labour to get there is really the expensive part.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like I might as well start with a good solid (known) baseline.

Front balance shaft seals are a known leak point. You should do those as a "while you're in there" fix.

Any strong feelings about new vs. rebuilt water pump?

while i have used a number of rebuilt waterpumps in the past, and not had any issues with them. there are pros and cons to both

in a rebuilt waterpump they are fitting components into a casting that has been heat cycled countless times. this changes the properties of the pump in such a manner that the new components may or may not stay put.

in a new pump, the components are more likely to be more tightly pressed.

in a used pump, the materials are less likely to change right after installation than in a new pump.

in a used pump fitment is hand checked on an item by item basis. on a new pump they might just be spot-checked.

a new one isn't that much more money, and you have the benefit of recourse with a new pump that you don't usually have with a used one. it is a lot easier to point to the pump as a failure when it is new than when it is used. it shouldn't be, but it is.

tough call. i bought a new one when i changed mine.

either way, just make sure it's the right one. there are 2 types of impellers out there, and one of them is known to have occasional issues. there is another thread here about that.

If it's OEM, can you be sure it's the right type of impeller?

There are plastic and metal impellers. My OEM Porsche pump was a plastic impeller and spun on the shaft after 17 years. The new one is metal and hopefully another 17 <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
