Starting Problem

Hi all,



Over the last week or so, my car has developed a problem starting up. When I start it, the engine comes up and after 1-2 seconds dies out, alomost like it is not getting enough fuel or so. Starting the second time it works perfectly. The same is true if it only sits for a short while. Starting it after having it sit for a few hours is OK, let it sit longer and it is more diffult to start and many times needs the "second cranck". Otherwise, car is great, steady idle, good power,...



Could it be that the fuel evaporates - since I see no leaks whatsoever?

Has anybody experienced a behavior like this? I searched the forum, but I don't think I found a problem quite like this... so please help!

Sounds to me like fuel is not staying in the fuel rail.



Search for threads having to do with "fuel pressure starting" and you'll find some issues with check valves, vacuum leaks, etc., like "Hard Starting IV" by KesslerR.

I second Tama's intuition. I'd actually start by checking the injectors, sounds to me like you've got a leaky one.

Thanks for the feedback so far!



Since you mention the injectors, I am using a fuel injector cleaner (the techron brand) in the tank filling I am currently running. Could that be related to the probelm I am having?

i'm betting it's the check valve back by the fuel pump. it sounds like it is not keeping the line full.

Hi Guys,



Thanks for all the suggestions! I looked up information on the internet, and I am a little confused:



The "Hard Starting IV" post refers to the fuel pressure regulator of which I found quite a bit information on the internet and which seems easily accessible. I also found information the injectors which are relatively easlily accessible as well.

However,I am not sure about the check valve flash is talking about, e.g. where is this loctated at (did not find the fuel pump either ...). The part itself is cheap, but if it is hard to get to that may equalize ....



Just trying to decide on where to start and what to replace first...

both the check valve and the fuel pump are located under the rear of the car above the transaxle, and behind a cover plate.

There's some troubleshooting tips on Clark's Garage (http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/fuel-16.htm), and you should probably change out your DME relay just as a catch-all precautionary measure before you get into tearing everything apart. It can't hurt!

Sounds similar to my problems, mine was a faulty/leaky FPR. One easy check you could do, is pull off the vacuum hose and check for signs of fuel on the vacuum side. There shouldn't be any. If there is, replace it and you should be on your way <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />
