Starter problem
#1

Hi guys.

I think my starter is giving me some trouble. Sometimes when I turn the key I can hear the ignition going and starter trying to turn the engine, but then it just exhales and dies.
When I release the key I hear a loud metal-clanking noise. (Most likely from the starter piston-thing).

I suppose this is a quick fix by replacing the starter or the brushes inside it?

Anyone got a clue? The starter is expensive as hell here in Norway, so I'm considering replacing the bushes if that will help.

have you verified your battery voltage with a real meter?

if so, and it is 12.5V or higher at rest after sitting over night do a search on "gummy starter syndrome" (always use "more search options")

Cleaning up the starter should help, but if it doesn't, you might want to check if Rockauto ships to Norway. I have a remanufactured starter from them, and it was about $120, if I recall correctly. It comes with a one-year guarantee, and has performed well so far.

Could be your fuel filter, have you changed it ever? BTW, you should use a Porsche filter for the car. I tried to put in a Mann filter and the car would not start, no fuel got to the rail. Changed to a Porsche filter and it started again, don't know why this happened, but it did.

Bad gas or plugs maybe not giving enough spark?

Does anyone know where I can get spare parts for the starter motor?

I'm gonna refurbish it myself, but can't find parts for it anywhere...

Have you tried a new DME? I recently bought a new one from Pelican and it starts much better now. Prior to that, I would have similar symptoms as you describe. I notice that the new DME is solid state and has longer pins, probably making better contact on what might be slightly corroded terminals. I also used wd-40 to clean the holes as well.

Yeah, the DME is fine.

I'm positive the starter is the culprit. Now to just find those spare parts...

All right guys!

I found a source for spare parts for our starter motors.

http://www.wagneralt.com/visions/default.asp

Just write 0-001-110-073 (the Bosch partnr for the starter for cars with manual gear) in the search field.

And Voila! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Remember to add that part to the thread we have started for "non-Porsche" reasonable cost parts if it all works out.

Hi again.

Long time since last update here. But I refurbished the starter myself and reinstalled it in the car the other day.

It works like never before! Cheap and easy fix. (Though installing the damn thing whilst lying on the ground all cramped up under the car is not for everyone. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

Anyway. It works now and all is good in Norway again!

Hi.

All in all the price was about $70, but I could have managed it without all the parts I ordered.

It could be done for around $50 I think. Well spent money! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
