Starter solenoid terminal post replacement?
#1

While installing my "Robby" cables last night, I noticed the threads on the post of my starter solenoid that the wire attaches to are pretty buggered. Does anyone know if it's possible to remove this threaded post and replace it? I tried removing the securing nut, and this loosens the post, but it appears to be held captive from within the solenoid, and I don't see a way to take the thing apart. Thanks.

OK - well, it's not the end of the world. There is plenty of good thread up the first 5/16" or so of the post, which is about 1/2" long total, and a few good threads at the very end. I think I'll add a third nut to help keep everything secure.

+ 1 On our starters ( OEMs ) you cannot replace just the solenoid. Well maybe you could, conceptually, but it's not available for purchase separately .

That bolt is probably held captive inside buy, oh maybe, a large wire that passes current <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

That don't look right somehow. I just checked and the small post on mine is 6mm. (The big post is 8mm.) Is it possible somebody "repaired" your small post in the past????

I thought it looks strange as well -it's only 3.8 mm in diameter. It's a remanufactured starter (a $120 special from Rockauto), so it looks like it has a non-standard solenoid post. The starter is several years old, but this has got me wondering if I should contact Rockauto about exchanging it, because the post clearly appears to be wrong. If they won't agree to this, I guess I'll look for some washers to bridge the gap between the diameter of the post and the diameter of the eyelet hole. All opinions on this are definitely welcome.
