The stock radio in my '94 coupe makes a loud popping noise when turned on so I assume I need to replace it. A fellow member of my local PCA chapter has a Sony CDX-5080 he said was installed in his 944 turbo. Does anyone know if this will fit my 968? If so, how much trouble is it to install myself?

Any single DIN sized unit will fit fine. Many threads on this topic...search away! Not too hard to DIY, especially if you've done your own head unit installs in the past. If you're keeping the stock speaker setup, pay attention to polarity when wiring up the new head unit to the wiring harness. Our cars have the striped wire positive. If you're doing new speakers, just make sure both ends are connected the same.
Now that I've answered your question, I may have some other info regarding the popping noise. That may actually be the amp(s) depending on what factory setup you have. Although annoying, not sure it's something that needs replaced.

Thanks for the info.
I was not very clear re the "popping". No sound comes from the system other than a loud intermittent pop. Could this still be the amp? Does it likely need replacing?

Striped wires are "positive"? Flash said in an earlier thread that the striped wires are NEGATIVE. I'm getting ready to replace my unit today. Who is correct?

Oops! Thanks for the correction. I thought I might have it backwards... The good thing is that I always use the schematic when doing electrical stuff on this car for that very reason!

Great info. While you knowledgeable folks are on this topic, what speaker replacements do you recommend for a '94 cabriolet? I'm particularly interested in replacing the door speakers. I saw Blaupunkt RPCX652 6.5" round mentioned somewhere. This is an acceptable choice to your knowledge (e.g. will it fit?)? Better choice? Is this addressed somewhere else in this forum (I don't remember seeing it anywhere if it is). Thanks
