Door lock solenoid / Problem with locks?
#1

Hello everyone-

I am currently experiencing an issue with my door locks:

When I lock the driver's side from the outside, only the driver's door locks. When I try to lock the doors from the passenger side, the passenger side locks but nothing happens on the driver's side. Neither light on the lock post at the doors is on when everything is locked.

When in the car, if I push the door lock button on the center console, only the passenger door locks. The driver door does nothing.

And here's a good one: When back outside, if I unlock the from the driver's side, both sides unlock! Unlocking from the passenger side only unlocks the passenger door, nothing happens to the driver's door.

So, I am thinking there is an issue with the door solenoid- What are your opinions? Where is the door solenoid and what else should I check? The connections going into the door lock post on the driver's door are connected so that is okay.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What happens when you use the rear lock?

Bob-

Will do.

Smokie-

You mean the rear hatch lock? That works fine from either the outside key or the button in the footwell. I thought the rear hatch was not related to the side door locking system? At least in my car, when all the locks were working properly (or so I had assumed), the rear hatch was always independant from the doors.

Approx 8-9 years ago I was experiencing the same issues biotechee is dealing with...I could manually lock the driver's door with the key only which would activate the passenger doorlock and the same was true for the interior lock button (activated only the passenger side). The electric click/noise sounds the same when you activate the lock release but nothing happens. I had installed a remote lock/unlock alarm system about a year before the issue cropped up and thought there might have been an issue with that install. Took the car in and it was a fairly simple fix of....you guessed it....the solenoid. The door panel has to come off and the replacement is fairly straight forward.

As flash mentioned I am again dealing with the problem. 2-3 months back the passenger side quit and a couple weeks back the driver's side quit on me as well. I have not had the time to deal. What a pain to manually have to insert the key to lock and unlock the doors after 10+ years of pushing a button!

Good luck with fix (this might be a good DIY write-up prospect as I'm sure we are not the only 2 cars to experince the issue)!

Thanks for the info Ron.... I ordered a solenoid and will tackle the problem once it arrives. I am hoping it is a loose connection, but I'll have a new solenoid on hand in case the original one is bad.

It is a bit of a hassle to have to lock both sides, but no biggie for the time being.

The solenoid was $66.21 from Sunset (not including shipping and handling).

I have the part number: 928-624-211-00

Wish me luck!

bio-I wish I had been on top of this better. More research has been done and it has now been determined that the problem is not the solenoid (you can test this by pushing the lock button in the car in front of the shifter....if it makes the usual sound... ie. clicking electronic? noise from the solenoid) then the next thing to check is the lockclip. I ordered the parts ($4.88-one for each door). Through research I found that the solenoids rarely go bad and the "weak link" in the system are the lockclips. The lockclips are shown in an exploded view in PET if you have access. They are about 3" long and made of white plastic which is why they fail in the first place (they get old brittle and the heads snap off). Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions.

Ron-

No worries my friend! At the very least, I will now have a spare door lock solenoid around in case one does fail (assuming the problem with my door is the white plastic lock clip). So, all is good! I called Sunset this afternoon and ordered the white plastic lock clips- 4 just in case more fail in the future.

So, I should be good to go once all the bits and pieces get here!

Thanks for the additional info BTW!

Ron,

I'm planning a deep dive on the doors of my '92 coupe. I've had intermittent locking problems as discussed further up in this thread, but I couldn't get them to reproduce as they seem to come and go. Hope it is just clips. The price is right, but where did you get the "lock clips"?

I have new door handle gaskets and my side windows are somewhat slow, so I will clean and lubricate what I can. I also have some closed cell high density acoustic mats and will reinstall the speakers as they have some resonances. Anyone have anything else I should put on the list while I'm in there?

Cheers
Erni

This resurfaces an issue I have.

Doors lock fine. All engage, all lights come on. Doors unlock fine as well.

The car unlocks itself, though. Sometimes. And not after a prescribed time, either - totally randomly, either while the car is in motion or has been sitting with the key out of the ignition in a parking spot for 6 hours. And when it does, it sets off the alarm.

I used to say that HEAT was the culprit/catalyst, as it was really hot out and after a long hard run that the first occurrence happened. But I was living in AZ at the time and when we moved to GA/AL it happened again in the winter. So, no idea what might be causing it. Any ideas? I removed the fuse for the alarm and it still goes off and the locks still work.

So what do I do in the meantime? Car never gets locked!
