Sunroof/targa roof problem
#1

Hi guys hope your all well.

Wondering if i can as usual have a little help/advice.

The problem i am having is that when i press the button to close the electric sunroof the the arms that raise and hold the roof shut do not stop and they keep going in until they are no longer holding the roof in the closed position.

They actually go into the roof removal position.

The only way i can get them to hold the roof shut is that i have to look at them while pressing the button and guess where closed is and stop pressin g the button at that point.

It has always been this way and i am sure that they would surely stop in the closed position and then require you to press the button again to release the targa top.

Am i right in thinking this surely it cant be a guessing game??

Any help is warmly appreciated.

manu thanks

I had this or very similar. My cable was snapped. Your right, no guessing. Hit the button and it closes or opens. Works like a charm since it was repaired.

Adjust the locking nut on the motor so the clutch engages. It is a finicky adjustment and needs secured with locktite. Otherwise, it will work it's way out of adjustment again. I had mine adjusted perfectly after replacing the gears and reattaching my drain tubes and then got crazy and bought a new inner and outer seal. The new seal was so big and fluffy, the roof was too tight and worked the nut loose and now I have the exact same issue...just haven't gotten around to readjusting. If you're not hearing hearing horrible crunching noises, the gears and the cable should be fine.

To release the roof, you place the ignition in position one and press and hold the button. That will allow the arms to retract so you can remove the roof. Do a search and check out the Clark's Garage PDF for more info on this roof mechanism.

Been there done that! Mine wasnt broken but I did retract the cable all the way back to wheel well cubby. After I figured that out took some finiking around but I got it close. For me the final piece of the puzzle was the micro switch adjustment on the hatch itself (big thanks to Cloud 9...68).

Oh sounds like i'm in for some fun so this cable that seems to have become detached where is it located do i simply remove the trip behind the sunroof and look there??

is the locking nut mentioned joined to the cable or is this a seperate issue?

Regarding adjusting i take it you guys mean i must adjust this cable so that when the roof is closed it is at it min/max??

I have no ther odd noises it actually closes and opens great for near 20 years old.

thanks i thought the guesiing game was a bit hit and miss for a german car, maybe if she was italian that would have been the case.

If the roof opens and closes, the cable is not detached, and since you hear no noises, the gears are not stripped....all of which is good news. The locking nut is on the motor and it controls the amount of "tension" or "resistance" when the roof closes and causes the clutch on the motor to engage and hence, stops the motion even if you're still pressing the button. That's how it knows the roof is closed. There are two nuts....an inner and an outer and you adjust the inner one and then lock it into place by tightening the outer one.

This whole sunroof system is hard to put into words. Those of us that have fiddled with it now know how it works, but you basically have to jump in, flap you arms wildly, and eventually you'll start to swim.
