Sunroof switch only work in the "open" direction
#1

This is a problem that has gone from being intermittent to constant. My sunroof switch works when I press it in the direction to unlock the sunroof, but not in the position to lock it. I can lock it manually by turning the screw in the cargo area. Does it sound like a problem with the switch, or something in the mechanism? I've never worked on the sunroof mechanism, so please be as descriptive as you can with your suggestions. Thanks!

If it's not a bad switch in the console (simple check with a meter) then it's prbably those nasty micro-limit switches in the rear left quarter panel. Had issues with my 944 not going into release mode so I could remove the sunroof and it was a matter of playing with the limit switches.

That is probably it. Just messed with micro switch to try to pull the sunroof down a bit tighter and adjusted it too far. It would unlock the sunroof when closing, had to readjust microswitch.

Thanks. What's involved with adjusting these micro-switches? Is it self-expanatory once you look at them?

Been a few years since I was in there. It's a Porsche which means it will be over complicated and not apparent as to it's proper operation
Just MARK where the limit switches are now and adjust ONE at a time until you get the feel of what you are adjusting. Only takes a few minutes to figure out what does what.

You have to take a good look at the position of the switches. According to Clark's Garage, and what I found on my car, the switches for the closing operation can only be adjusted together.

There are two small phillips head machine screws with very small nuts on the other end that have to be loosened. It would be much easier to take the motor and brace out in order to get a close look and to mark the switch position. Just remove plug and there are 3, 10mm nuts holding the motor and brace. The only problem I ran into is the roof driveshaft. I did not want to remove it from the motor, so that was a restriction, just be careful when moving things around.

I found that moving the adjustment out towards the center of the car, it would make the motor stop a little later. But go too far and it will not stop until the levers get to the "remove sunroof" position.

But like Dave said, check the actual rocker switch first. But if the roof works normally with the key in the full on posit.,not acc.,then it is probably the limit switches.

Thanks for all the advice. Hopefully when I get in there, I'll understand what you guys are talking about .

Just one point of clarification about my specific problem: At the moment, the sunroof doesn't lock at all, with the key either in the acc or full on position. When I press the switch to the "close" position, nothing happens. No sound or motion of any kind. But it does move in the open position (which is kind of useless, as I can't get it locked).

Oh, one question. If it's the micro-limit switches, what is the most likely thing to make the go out of position? General road vibrations? Thanks again. Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to take a look back there.

When my limit switch went out of adj I could not unlock the sunroof to remove it. I imagine it's the same switch that would stop you from the reverse operation. Was a quick fix once I got in there.

Great to hear. I'll probably take a look later this week or on the weekend. Hopefully it's a simple adjustment.

OK, flush with the success of the new starter curing the grinding problem I was having when I first started the car, I decided to tackle the sunroof microswitches. I removed the carpeting in the passenger side rear quarter panel, which exposed the sunroof drive mechanism. Below the mechanism, and a bit toward the back of the car, are two tan-colored relays. Directly above the mechanism is a connector of some kind, with four wires connecting to it. I guess I wouldn't know a microswitch if it jumped up and bit me on the nose, but I'm not seeing anything back there that fits my imagined description of what might be a sunroof microswitch. Are either of these two items I've described the microswitches? I don't see anything that looks adjustable, position-wise, in other words. Could somebody please give a description of where these microswitches are located, and how to go about making the adjustment that could allow my sunroof to lock when I press the console switch in the forward direction? Thanks.

If I get ambitious tomorrow I can remove my left quarter guard and take some pictures to explain but.... since you have it apart do you have a camera that does decent close-ups? From there we can advise via the picture.

Yes, I have a decent camera. It's been awhile since I've posted pictures to the site, though, and I've never used the file-shrinking software that seems to be needed for most pictures, so I may have to play with it a little. I really appreciate the offer of help, though, so I'll make every effort to post a picture or two. I'm taking this coming Wednesday through Friday off work, so if I don't get to it sooner, I'll definitely do it by Wednesday. Thanks again.

Not sure what just happened, but the message says the upload was successful, so hopefully the stuff I was talking about is visible (I can't see it as I type this). You can (hopefully) see the connector with the four wires connected to it, just above the sunroof drive mechanism, near the top of the picture, and the two tan-colored relays near the bottom of the picture. Unfortunately, I don't have image capture software on this computer, so I can't download the image to PowerPoint, and do things like circle items or draw arrows to them. Anyway, hopefully this picture will help point me to these micropositioning switches that I need to try to adjust. Thanks.

The switches are the white block at the top of the picture with the 5 spade connectors. On the back side of the block are tiny bumps that are pushed in by the movement of the sunroof mechanism. One of them is either not operating properly (use a VOM to check) or is slightly out of position.

Aha! We have a positive ID of the elusive microposition switches. Thanks; I figured that was the most likely candidate.

So, now that I know where it is, what's the method for adjusting them? I assume I need to remove the block to get the the back where the switches are. Once I have it out, how do I test whether and when they are in the right position? Do I push them in a little, one at a time, then press the console switch, until I can get the sunroof to move as it should? Or is there a more elegant method? And this may be a dumb question, but what do I connect my VOM to to test the functioning of the switches? I can't promise, but if I'm successful with this (with a lot of coaching from the experts on this board), I'll see if I can post a DIY, as I think understanding how to do this would be very helpful to many long-suffering coupe owners. Thanks.

Slightly loosen the phillips screws. There are very small nuts on the bottom also. If the screws are left snug, the switches can be moved slightly with a screwdriver or similar. I cannot tell where the slots are in the pic.,but I moved mine out towards the center of the car to close. I moved them too far and had to return towards the fender to correct that.

It makes it slightly easier to get to the screw heads if you loosen the 3 nuts that hold the motor to the car. you do not really need to get to the back of the motor. You can hook up a meter if you want, but I believe that you should be able to just fiddle with the switches. Again, go to Clark's Garege, check that out.

Thanks for all the tips. Now that I kind of understand what I'm dealing with, I'll also take another look at Clark's garage. I'll hopefully be able to start on this tomorrow, although tomorrow is shaping up to be a pretty busy day...

"If it's not a bad switch in the console (simple check with a meter)"

After working again for a few months, my sunroof is back to displaying the symptoms that prompted me to start this thread - I can open/unlock it by pressing on the rear half of the console switch, but I can't close/lock it by pressing the front half of the switch. When I press on the front half of the switch, there is no reaction of any kind - no sound, no vibration, nothing.

I'm not sure how to test the switch, but I took my trusty VOM, and measured the resistance across every combination of the six connector pins while pressing the switch in boith directions. For anybody who has worked with this switch before, here are the conditions which give an indication of a closed connection (zero resistance measured on the ohmmeter):

1) When I place the VOM leads across pins 6 and 2, and press the rear half of the switch

2) When I place the VOM leads across pins 2 and 5, and press the front half of the switch

3) When I place the VOM leads across pins 4 and 1, and press the rear half of the switch

4) When I place the VOM leads across pins 1 and 3, and press the front half of the switch

No other combination of pins gives an indication of a closed connection. Is this normal behavior for the switch? If so, I guess it's time to tear into the micropositioning switch... Thanks.

Well, I've gone through the entirety of Clark's Garage's excellent troubleshooting procedure of all the sunroof's components, and no luck. I've checked the console switch, the output voltage to the sunroof relay, the supply voltage to the sunroof relay, the sunroof relay itself, the directional relays, the voltage supply to the directional relays, the electrical function of the microposition switches (referred to by Clark as limit switches), and the positioning of the microposition switches. Everything checks out perfectly. Interestingly, during the course of the troubleshooting, I found that fuse #1, a 25 amp fuse, had blown, but amazingly, replacing it had no effect.

The sunroof can be opened, and locked into position, manually using a 21 mm socket on the hexagonal nut on the motor, so it seems that the mechanical aspects of the sunroof is OK (no binding cables or broken gears, or anything like that). It just doesn't respond at all to the pressing the front part of the center console switch. Any other ideas? Needless to say, I'm near my wits' end; this is pretty much the only thing on the car that isn't working (other than the cruise control, but who the heck needs that in a sports/GT car, anyway? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )
