Source of ignition ON switched power
#1

Where is the best place to tap into a ignition ON switched source to feed a relay for a wbo2 controller?

Ideally the power source should be inside the car as that is where the controller is. Not after ACC position switched power like the radio gets.

Hmmm.... Not sure about one in the interior, but I bet if you traced the line that goes to the DME relay terminal #86, which energizes the fuel pump relay when the key is in the On position, you'd find the one you want. With any luck, it will end up in the interior somewhere, or if not, you could always tap into that line and pull it through the firewall.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to connect the WBO2 controller to an ignition On source? I connected mine to one that goes to +12V when the key is in the ACC position, per the instructions that came with the WBO2 controller. Thanks.

I though about connecting it to ACC, and I might still go that way. A simple solution would be just to tap the power off the back of the cigarette lighter socket - no relay needed in that case. What I don't like about that is the heater circuit would be continuously running if the key is only on the ACC position. It doesn't need to run unless the car is on, so best connecting to ON.

Alternative is to run a fly lead from the fuse box (DME fuse) to trigger a relay and then run power from the cig lighter supply.

Cloud - where did you connect yours?

How much power does the WB O2 controller take. Unless it is something very small, you should run a new line from the fuse box area. I'd be easy to mount a relay off the On side that would switch power from one of the main leads to the fuse box, and then use an in line fuse.

Or, from my owners manual, there is supposed to be a fuse box in the drivers footwell. I can't attest to it, but you may be able to tap into power and switched battery there, as well as to add another fused circuit

It takes 2 amps.

I think I'll power it via the cig power supply with a relay switch off the dme / diagnostic power.

Sounds like that should work.

not sure i'd be messing with the power to the dme. there are a couple of switched hot points in the stereo area that would be a lot easier and safer to tap.

That's what I did. Poked around with a voltmeter until I found one that was +12V in the ACC position.

<img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/whine.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> @%$! cars should have a standardized tap-in point under the hood and under the dash for things like this.

Not for ignition "ON" if I recall - only for "ACC". Remember this is for the relay trigger only, not power supply.

hmmm - have you looked at the wiring diagram yet?
