you might only be rubbing on the clip at the front of the wheel arch, which holds the rocker cover in place.



failing that, check the rear camber angle. if you don't have enough negative camber, it can rub.

Exactly, rubbing on that clip when suspension contracts over bumps, but clip needs to be there, right? Would there be any alignment adjustment ( or height - I believe it to sit slghtly lower in the rear) that would fix that? Alternatively going to 255 tire?

it could easily be alignment. see the comment about negative camber.



you should not have to go to a smaller tire. i have a 10" rim with a 285 on it, and a 52 offset. no rubbing. a 9.5 with a 48 offset would actually sit IN 4mm more than mine. the 265/35-18 is only .3" larger in diameter than the 285/30-18 i have, which means only 4mm larger at that corner.



i suspect incorrect camber or toe as the issue.

Has anyone tried blacking out the centers on Sport Classic II wheels? I am considering giving this a try, but I wanted to consult the forum first. They would be going on a Midnight Blue Metallic cab. I am considering leaving them stock silver, going with a darker matte gray center, or a black center. Any suggestions?

because of the intensely webbed nature, i would powder coat them, and not paint them.  otherwise, trying to clean them can result in the paint starting to look really bad really fast.  remember, black shows everything.  they can look dirty REALLY fast.

 

i thought about this when i was tossing around the idea of having the denali wheels done, which are almost identical to those.  i was strongly advised against it by both of the companies i use for wheel work.

What's the max rear wheel and tire that can be squeezed into a stock-bodied 968 without rolled fenders?  Try 18x12 CCW wheels with 315/30-18 from my GT3!!! The only part that rubs is the e-brake cable so I'm going to make a fitting that guides it closer to the spring plate.

 

I'm also trying 275/35-18 tires in the front this weekend and will see how that goes.

I'm very surprised ( and that's an understatement ..more like shocked... :o . )  that wheels anyway near that size fit in a  "stock"  wheel well.   I had just one size up tires on both my front and rear 17s, ( although in fairness, I do have 20mm spacers on the front and 15mm spacers on the rear, and the car is lowered by about 1" from stock height ) and the front tires were almost always rubbing on sharp turns.  But 315/30 18s  are HUGE in every respect by comparison to what I had , so even with a stock ride height set up. I can't imagine how in the world Trevor got those wheels in there, much less able to drive the car without contact anywhere on the well, or fender, etc..  wow.

Dan, I can believe that your front tires were rubbing because it's mostly a function of overall tire diameter and pushing the offset too far out. The front fenders don't take nearly as much wheel as the rear since they need to turn. I've found that if you go over 25.5" front tire OD and close to ET50 offset then the risk of fender rub is pretty high. You can get away with wider front wheel and tire if you keep them a bit shorter - I'm also on stiffer suspension and try to avoid steering lock.

 

Re: rear wheel/tire size, in fairness I'm autocrossing 18x11 with 295/30 tires tomorrow and don't have any contact issues anyway after street testing. The 18x12 with 315/30 tires does touch the e-brake cable so this was only a test fit to see where the contact was. I'll need to remedy this as well as the suspension stop from early 944 cars [see the steel rectangle at bottom of 3rd photo] which may have contact when the rear suspension extends / rebounds.  I'm going to cut the outer 3rd of this bump stop off my race car and then the 18x12's will fit with big rubber!

I'll be interested to hear if you really need that much tire with the amount of power we have.  Can you shoot a pic from the rear?  I bet it looks really bad ass with all that tire back there!
