RS Barn cat back vs BB sound?
#41

yeah - i had a glass pack on one of my systems - i loved the sound of the system, and it performed better than stock, but the louvres inside the glass pack were causing turbulence that showed a torque dip on the dyno at about 3k

danged finicky car when it comes to exhaust

[quote name='flash' post='35227' date='May 8 2007, 06:09 PM']the 58 won't work - not enough side rejection - also, you'd have to get the 58 way too close to get the low end, and you would get all the flutter of the air movement

definitely need a hyper cardoid and preferably a shotgun - let me know if it becomes an issue - i have one with its own battery phantom supply that i might be able to ship to you for the recording (just have to check my schedule)

OT-

Who can afford to be an audiophile and a gear head?

I upgraded my Yamaha a few years back and got a Denon. That took me down a very long and costly road. By the end of it all I had a new DVD player, New towers, all new cabling ( had no idea cables and good speaker wire was so costly) and a Programmable remote.

The problem I now face is that my Denon has no HDMI. So here I go again. It’s so hard to resist upgrading other components when you’re in one of those AV stores. Focus Danielson, FOCUS!

Flash, how did you get a bunch of "louvres" into the glass pack? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> No wonder it didn't sound right! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> (Love the fact that smilies are back <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />). Next time, instead of packing all of that art work into the muffler, just put in some louvers. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

roflmao - well, it wasn't too tough - being pyramid in shape and all

by the way, i often spell some words with a "u" too (colour, flavour) - my dictionary and my sommelier say it's ok

rhudeboy - funny - i chose the yamaha over the denon because of the hdmi and video upscaling it had - must have been a year later or something

Flash, no dyno results, but I can feel the low end torque shortage in my car with the set up I have now. To be honest, the original set up with no cat, no resonator and the stock muffler felt great (sounded like cr@p) ran the best. A dyno may have said otherwise, but it sure felt good. My focus now is the race car. The 968 will stay as it is for now.

OK, getting back on track...although I'd be happy to talk audio - rhudeboy you have PM - I'm all set for recording. One of my fellow audio guys is rigging me up with the necessary gear...shotgun mic(s) - will probably do stereo just because I can - boom stand, MP3 recorder, etc. May run a test sometime soon and hopefully post a clip if it comes out good. Now we just need cars. I know Cosimo is coming, but I think Mark may have a conflict?

definitely do a test - play around with the placement - getting the low end without getting impact flutter is a bit tricky - i was at 6ft and slightly off axis - for the static tests, i think i will do 4ft and a bit more off axis next time

stereo could be weird, unless you very carefully measure the distances to the source (phasing issues show up really quickly in pulse recordings like this), but sure worth a try i guess

check the roll off on the mic - make sure it's off - it's the 40hz stuff that was giving me the problem, but with the roll off on, i got no low end and everything sounded thin

by the way - you should grab an spl meter too and get measurements at specific rpm intervals

there is a specific procedure for placement and such for measuring levels for racing, but danged if i can find it right now

good luck

Thanks for the hints and tips...never recorded an exhaust before...just normal things like bands, radio shows, concerts, baseball games, football games, DJs live on amusement park rides and ski slopes, you know - run of the mill type stuff. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I do have a SPL meter and that's a great idea.

Would you say this resembles the sound of a BB a RSB or neither?

I know its a subpar recording at best.

For those who consider buying a exhaust line.

If you have enough money and you don't mind buying overseas , try Cargraphic parts, a german maker. They have a full line called NGT group for the 968 ( so you will be eligible to compete in this group in Germany, he he he ) I don't know how many extra HP are expected. The quality looks fine ( i have the paper catalog : ask it and you'll see), compatible the demanded price.

http://www.cargraphic.com/index.php?/s,6,7...38/&start=3

Here's a french maker' site ( SCART exhaust ) for the 968 as well.

http://www.scart-exhausts.com/ang/detail_p...php?produit=131

I haven't tried any of these exhaust lines ( got a full stock 968 ).

pretty sure that cargraphic unit shown is the exact one that has been shown in an independent test to actually lose power - i know that it is the system that was removed from a car and replaced with the rs barn system and the result was improved performance

i don't know anything about the scart stuff

i do know that the 100 cell and 200 cell cats i've tried lost torque and did not get hot enough to keep the O2 sensor hot, so the car kept going into open loop

Flash,

I just had the testpipe(so no resonator, see picture) form Cargraphic installed, and the rear muffler is on its way and I am still using the stock cat. Seeing your post I am wondering how much power was lost with the Carghraphic unit? Or was there still a gain above the stock system??

And did you use the testpipe or the the one with the centre muffler??

Cheers,

Rutger

it wasn't me that tested it, so i can't speak to which pipe they used, but as it was a US car, i am reasonably sure they left the cat in - we know that removing it loses torque down low, so i doubt that they did that

i doubt that it lost a lot, as it is the closest to a stock system - but, nobody seems willing to post charts on that system, including cargraphic - there is a lot of hoo ha bandied about regarding TUV and validity of claims, but i can't find anything anywhere that says that just because it got TUV approval that they actually tested it for power claims, or were even required to - the only thing i can find is that it meets minimum sound and fitment requirements - there are a lot of added features available through TUV, and performance testing is one of them, but it is not required, and i can't see anywhere that they did it - if they did, i'd sure like to see the data

as for gains, so far, NO cat-back has shown any gains on the dyno - there is some room for argument that some of the systems might provide a small amount of gain up top in real world application, but they also show torque loss down low - sort of a give and get there

while i'm sure that somebody somewhere has come up with a different combination that works, thus far, the rs barn is the only one to actually show no losses, and with data to support it - it also opens the door for the other mods (chip and airbox) to really optimize, likely because of the way it manages and maintains the torque - they all seem to work very nicely together

a lot of how a system works depends on what else is done to the engine - how much power it puts out is largely responsible for determining what system to install - i have banged up against the power ceiling of the previous system, and am now working with a new system, and getting close to it being right

both pete and i are continuing to work on developing systems for cars with a lot of mods, and are making some progress - film at 11

hope that helps
