exhaust performance and sound!
#1

Reading about all these performance exhausts, their weight contribution and sounds, begs me to ask " does nobody like the stock exhaust sound"? Because I certainly do. Everytime I hear a Subaru farting past then beltching as it dumps fuel has me in stitches. I'm not against extra performance, no indeedee! But may I please keep the original sound, I love it. Also regarding throwing out the spare tyre etc to lighten matters, why not run with less fuel as 74litres=about 16.5 Imp galls/19.8US galls which is about 120lbs! If you're crossing Death Valley definitely get every last drop in, but for local runs top up a bit less. If I had an inconvenient puncture(is there any other kind!)I think just reaching in the boot(= trunk) and hauling out the spare would be heaven, providing the inflator works and the tyre expands of course! Is there a replacement stainless exhaust sounding like the factory one? Please let me know. Ta.

it's not so much that people don't like the sound as much as not having enough of it - when you are rally driving hard, being able to hear th engine facilitates shifting, as you don't have to watch the tach, once you learn the note of the exhaust at a given rpm

I, for one, want a little extra bark from my car.

I loaned my S2 to a friend this summer and he loved the spirited driving. We were chatting one day and I said he could borrow the 968 for a weekend too just for kicks. He asked me to punch it so he could hear the car, I did and he had that bewildered look of "Was that it?". I'm sure he was expecting the braaaaaaaaaaap of a 911 with a Fabspeed.

So, as egotistical as it might be, I want a little braap along with the few extra HP <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I want the best of both worlds. I'd hate for my car to sound as if I was driving wide open throttle all the time, as many of the "fart can" tend to sound. However as I pass 4k I want it to let all now that a sports car is moving pass with great speed. Look and Listen to me go <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

The sock note should be a little deeper from idle to 4k as well. The 350 Z is a good example. However that's another .5 liters and 2 more cylinders.

i am still wrestling with this - the RS Barn header makes the note much higher and more "kazooey", especially when it's cold, regardless of which muffler and/or resonator - it isn't as bad when it's warm, but since it cools down so fast, it frequently annoys me - this is because you are hearing one cylinder at a time, and the tubing is thin and long - the OEM header sounds much throatier, but does not flow as well up top - tough call - i'm not sure where i will ultimately end up, but it will likely involve dual exhaust

the rs barn cat-back on the oem header is the best note i've heard so far - smooth and warm, without the raspy resonance of things like the b&b

but everybody is different - ds968 loves the b&b - me not so much - this is a very subjective area, and since no cat-back has been shown to make any measurable power by itself, it's really up to what you want to hear

I'm sure there's at least one or two other threads that are closer to the topic of various other cars' exhaust tune , but since search pulled up this I'll make the comment here : as mentioned a million times, this is as subjective as it gets so one man's noise is another man's music, but having said that I detest the sound of the 911 flat six probably more than anything I have ever heard. To me it sounds as pathetic as any engine note can get..hell, diesel engines almost sound better to my ears. Even with the stock exhaust the 968s 4 cyl sounds more powerful and beefier than any 911s., put a decent aftermarket exhaust on it and it makes the 911 pale by comparison..as if it was a VW bug or something.. Yuk So not only do I dislike the lines of the 911 ( GT2 and GT3 and 996Turbo possibly excluded, with the 993 barely tolerable ) but the sound that comes out of all those cars is just sad... IMHO.

Sad but true DS, I completely agree. The best sounding new car (unmodified) to me is the Infiniti G37...just the right amount of rumble.

I agree with that as well, even the G35 always had a nice sound ( and the first generation of those very nice looking IMO ) , the G37S is great in both respects.

The sound of the G37SX is what first attracted me prior to my purchase of the vehicle. I am now driving my second G37SX vehicle. Sorry for the sloppy writing.

Well for my ears, and money, it's the RS Barn cat back on OEM headers. Flash is spot on.

I like the RS Barn headers, because they actually add performance..and, I may be in the minority, but I like the rasp of the headers (I do have a resonator).

there's a bit more to the story there.

i actually lost power with the headers (yes, naturally aspirated). when i first heard about them, back in 2005, i questioned claimed gains. then i saw charts, so i bought one. after installation though, i thought it felt flat at the bottom. i chalked it up to imagination. what i did not know at the time was that the charts were done with a cold air intake and a chip. there were no charts that showed the header alone. since then i have been able to do a bit more testing.

basic exhaust theory says that 4 to 1 headers can make upper end power, but at the cost of some low end torque. tri-y headers (like OEM) makes better low but can cost some top end.

the rs barn header does exactly what would be expected. since most people run a chip and airbox mod, the header helps maximize the upper end gains of those. however, there is less of a lower end gain. there is still gain, but not as much. by itself, the header loses low end. nobody i know of runs just the header though, so it's moot. the end result is that you get more overall gains with it than without it, on a normally aspirated car.

that being said, there is an easier and far less expensive way to get almost all of the upper end gains of the header. as soon as i can get a naturally aspirated car owner that would be willing to do it, i can get charts to show it. it worked great on the supercharged car, but i need to do it on a naturally aspirated one, and then i can have charts to prove it.

funny stuff.

the problem with doing this whole thing is that the car would have to be down for a little over a week. i don't have storage space, and most people can't leave their car down for that long. also, since i have no vested interest, i would expect the costs to be covered by the owner. while it would only be a few hundred dollars, its doubtful that anybody would want to spend it before knowing how much of a gain they would get. sort of a "catch-22".

exhaust on this car has probably been the most complicated and fruitless modification attempted, with almost all things being expensive and resulting in power loss, as well as sounding like a ricer and/or being obnoxiously loud. it boggles the mind.

Flash I know you're slammed right now so this can't happen anytime too soon, but I've found a replacement wiring harness and a shop that'll do the work. Now I just need to get the two together and I may have a car that will move under its own power in a month or two. I could potentially be your guinea pig for this project.

As far as exhaust notes go, I just picked up an e90 335i that has the BMW software upgrade and M Performance muffler installed (<acronym title='previous owner'>PO</acronym> paid $2200 for it!) and the sound is fantastic! Might be a bit loud for some - sounds like an F1 race car when you get on it, with a nice burble on decel - but it's dead quiet while cruising.

I'm going for it today: RSB cat-back on stock header, stage 1 chip, and switching back in my K&N. Just wanted to acknowledge and give thanks for all the good information gleaned from the site.

Can't wait!

PS - usually I opt for stock when I can, but in this case the factory resonator has failed and I'll be damned if I'm spending thousands to replace the stock muffler. So for far less - I'm treating the car to a small upgrade.

Great choice, You would be really happy with the header too...I know I am Smile

Cat back system makes no claim regarding increased power (perhaps 1 hp), but does reduce weight by about 33 lbs over stock. The header will provide true performance enhancement, but if I say a number certain people will feel compelled to chime in...

YMMV
