RS Barn cat back vs BB sound?
#21
I would still really like to hear all these different exhausts
Man, ditto here.

So who in the DC area has a BB or RSB? Cosimo, Darryl, husky, Kathy, Jay anyone?

actually, daryl, grab a shotgun and a stand and plug into protools - i have not had the opportunity to re-record everything - the device i used before did not have the headroom necessary

this would give the opportunity of at least comparison of the 4 systems we already know would be there (stock, b&b, rs barn, mod rs barn)

i'll do it for sure the next time we have a gathering

I should be able to pull that off...I don't have protools but know plenty of people who do from my radio days. Let me check around and see if I can borrow someone's laptop and get some sound. Will probably end up being a SM58 on a boom stand or something similar. I'll defer to you as to mic placement... I'll make a couple of calls..."sounds" like fun.

the 58 won't work - not enough side rejection - also, you'd have to get the 58 way too close to get the low end, and you would get all the flutter of the air movement

definitely need a hyper cardoid and preferably a shotgun - let me know if it becomes an issue - i have one with its own battery phantom supply that i might be able to ship to you for the recording (just have to check my schedule)

boom stand is perfect

Why, of course you can Ok, not the comparison results but until those are posted, here's an A.V. clip ( from one of my old posts ) of my car with the BB catback, NO resonator, and at full throttle in 3rd gear

It's important to know this was captured / recorded on a cell phone camera so the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. In "real life" it's a much deeper tone that reproduced by this phone recording, but you'll get some idea nonetheless..

the thing to remember about any of these recordings is that the sound will only be as good as the system you play it on - run it through your computer speakers, and it will sound thin and buzzy - run it through my main system with 4 12" woofers and a couple thousands watts of power and it rattles the windows

when i did the other recordings i should have gotten the mic a bit closer and used a better recording medium than the little digital gadget i had - i didn't accurately capture the low end - that is going to be a problem to be overcome in the next set of recordings - as i am working on a new exhaust system now, i plan to make recordings and play them back on my studio monitors and establish a set of "control" parameters to this can be repeated accurately

as dan points out, real life driving is different than sitting in a garage too - the engine sounds different under load than just revving up - passes like he did are a good thing to record - i plan to do both

I've not heard the two mufflers side by side but the B&B muffler is like sex to me, if it could get any better I couldn't stand it!! What a great sound! And it's beautifully polished, smooth welds, etc. I think it's hard to make a great engine sound not terribly good, except I couldn't stand the stock 968 exhaust. Was too quiet and the car sounded more like a sewing machine than a sports car. Smooth but no roar. I suspect that either exhaust system is going make the listener happy.

Well said, even my wife thought the 968 exhaust was wimpy and much prefers the sound with the RSB.

quite a few of us have heard them side by side - it's pretty easy to tell them apart - i've driven them both, and can tell differences from that too - there are some who have actually had both systems

while the b&b is certainly better than stock, it has a bit more of a "raaaat" to it, and a bit more of a flutter, (even with the optional resonator, though it does help) than the rs barn - the b&b might be a bit more free flowing, which, on a modified engine or race car, potentially could help at the very top, but at the expense of some torque loss down low

the upside of the b&b is that the muffler does not hang down quite as far, so from the rear, if you get down real low and this kind of thing bugs you, it looks a bit better from the rear - the upside of the rsb is the slip-fit design, eliminating the known weld issues of the b&b

however, even if i was willing to live with the torque loss, that noise bugs me enough to do something different - i've changed my system 6 times now in an effort to get just the right tone AND not lose power or have a power ceiling (that was the latest problem)

the work continues, and i think i'm close to what i want, but much of this is subjective - sound is a very personal thing - some like the higher pitched sound (ferrari), some the low burble (boss 302)

i should get a chance to record everything very soon - after all, it is time for the next paso robles run

I originally removed the cat and resonator but had the stock muffler. Sounded pretty ricey so I managed to find a guy that bought a 968 with a B&B muffler on it / no resonator. He was switching back to a stock sounding system (not sure what, I offered my stock muffler) and wanted to get rid of his B&B. He had it removed and I paid for shipping (about $50). I welded in a glass pack and the B&B. Sounds great....at the right price. I tend to get a lot of complements even from carrera guys. I belive this system is significantly louder than the B&B system itself...
