If you chose to make your own, when making the battery to starter cable the small wire that was originally housed under the insulation of the large wire should be separate.  Originally it was placed next to the bare large one and heat shrinked together. Age and moisture sometimes caused the insulation of the small wire to break down and with moisture cause the starter to engage.  Had a 968 to engage the starter motor and run the car across through the shop till it came to rest against a lift at the other end.
