968 LED Headlights (Hi/Lo), Foglights & Driving Lights

Disclaimers! All of these LEDs are made of 100% pure Chinesium, so let the buyer beware! But they are the only LED bulbs I have found that fill the bill. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!



My ‘93 968 Coupe is stock electrically behind the lights with the exception of an LED light bar illuminating the under side of the speedo/tach/gauges.



These LED lights installed easily and work well right now (newly installed), but for how long? Who knows? They are much brighter and provide much better visibility than the original Halogen bulbs. They seem to be well tolerated by oncoming traffic – no high-beam blowback. Finally, they are plug & play in my car – no pulsing or other misbehavior. But they are 100% pure Chinesium, so …………



Notes:



1. The LED H4/9003 Headlight Bulbs are a little longer sticking out the back of the glass headlamp unit (944 631 912 01) than the original Halogen bulbs. The plug cap (944 612 935 01) did accept the slightly longer LED bulbs and seems to have connected properly and securely. <i>Caveat Emptor</i>! - YMMV.



2. The H3 LED Foglights seem a little less bright than I would like, but, they are foglights, so …



3. N.B. Amazon is showing limited stock available for the H1 LED Bulb as of 2/17/22 – be there or be square! The Driving Light socket requires a replacement LED bulb with very narrow max thickness to fit in the narrow Halogen H1 socket hole. These LEDs do that for me as they have an advertised max thickness of 8.3mm.

We cannot use led or xenon upgrades in Europe as none of them have the E4 euro approval,



If the tester finds them on test day he can prevent you taking your car on the highway, and make you change them back to the correct lamps, and charge you for a second test

In Holland things are a bit easier then, when your car is not approved due to faults/irregularities then you have one week to do something about it.

When you return within a week the re-check is for free.

Waylander, probably yes....for the CE/TUV signatures.

But they're not checking your bulbs unless at the time of the test they are not correct and it's easy to see that those bulbs are too bright or something.

Hey Dilbertnomore! Some time has passed since you installed the hi/lo beam LED bulbs. Are you still liking them? I checked them out on Amazon and there were some negative reviews related to dispersion on high beams--shining up in the trees as one reviewer put it. Of course, that could be a headlight aiming issue but what has is been your experience since you installed.

That is the problem here in the Netherlands ,they do not check for the correct markings E nbr's etc , but only for correct height of the beam and the pattern .

If the checks out oke than you will get signed off .

 

I wish it was more strickt here , it is very anoying these kind of aftermarket upgrades , even todays cars with approved led light,s are too bright , specially when it is raining and dark outside .

Yes I totally agree, some of these new LED cars are so bright that they blind at night,

And some of these battery cars are like mobile glow sticks

I'm finding that in the 968, my eye level is below the cutoff point for a LOT of oncoming brighter-than-the-sun LED headlights. Teslas seem to be the worst offenders, with headlights that are obviously mis-aligned and absolutely blinding. Let's hope the upcoming 'smart' headlights will solve this problem, but for now it's annoying and dangerous. Thanks DOT!

I thought the beam pattern was created by the front glass lens on the headlight and had nothing to do with the bulb. I guess however that the bulb location could change that slightly if it were too far forward or back....

And the Mini's tail lights are maddening! The right light points left, and the left light points right. When both are on it is supposed to look like the English flag, but to most people it will just cause them to question what the driver is doing.

Ryan this is true, but the light source has to be in exactly the right position and the correct orientation, LED cannot manage that currently

After nearly a month living with the up front LEDs l’m still happy with my decision to move away from the Halogen bulbs. No issues to report, just much brighter light. I’d buy them again. 

 

As I noted from the start of this thread, these LEDs are made of 100z pure Chinesium. Caveat emptor and YMMV apply.

I have a Model X Tesla and the LED headlights are perfect. I have never had anybody flash their lights at me coming coming from the opposite direction. And the auto switch between hi and lo beams works flawlessly.

I've had Hikari 2022 HyperStar H4's in mine for two years. Love them. BTW, from driving through the California Redwood Forrest, the regular lights shine up in the trees also. And the dust cap had to go. These have a fan for cooling. The cap would kill airflow.

I rarely drive at night anymore - just not much reason to. I have noticed with the beginnings of my cataracts, that most cars/trucks lights are extremely bright. Too bright. I also don't understand the folks who feel the need to run fog lights on a sunny day? - New ford trucks seem to have a trifecta when I look at them, regular lights/high beams/fogs....I don't get it.

 

As far as the comments about US regs, they really vary by state. Here in Florida there is no yearly vehicle inspection, so most folks do what they want regardless how annoying. The truck craze here now is front end up in the air and rear end dragging. Lights are then right in everyone's faces and the cops don't do anything about it. To me it looks like a dog when it's got worms draggin it's butt on the carpet..

 

I don't think i have driven the 968 at night more than once or twice in the 10 years I have owned it. I use the headlights so infrequently I forget to test them and they get stuck....
