Porsche 993 headlights
#1

So this has probably been asked a million times over, but I cannot seem to find a satefying answer when searching here or on google.

I want 993 headlights on my car, and I know I need new front fenders for this. But I'm wondering where I'm supposed to get these. Deutchnine are the only ones I've seen who have these, but they don't have them on their website.

Anyone have any idea where I could get these? Or if anyone make something like this I could contact?

Theres a long thread about this on here. The guy had to custom fab his fenders to fit the lights.

yup - there is no clean way to do this. it's not plug and play.

i looked at this carefully. the result was that the fender profile needs to go up. even then, the fact that the light has that large area on top that sticks out looks just as goofy as the pop ups, but you have to look at it all the time. weight savings was very little, after adding in all of the things necessary.

dog that won't hunt.

there is yet another guy trying, but i saw his prototype, and i'm not impressed. it just looks odd. personal taste i suppose.

It's been done by Deutschnine and one guy over on RL - Odurandina. He said he may be interested in getting molds taken of his fenders. He's semi-local but I haven't seen the car in person yet, just the photos. Anyway, it looks nice from the photos!

The purple cab with lambo-doors also has a 993 headlight conversion, and those are definitely pointed incorrectly.

Yeah, and if you look at this car in profile, the headlights stick way up above the fender line. Looks really goofy. The nicest execution I've seen is by a long-extinct company from Japan call Arktech, but even on that one, I never say a profile view, so its lights may have stuck up as well.

This is a tough one - either you give up the 968's very attractive low fender line, or you stick with the pop-ups. Or you do it on the cheap like me, and just stuff some dinky Hella bi-halogens in there, and make a pair of curved lexan covers that sorta match the fender line.

Was that a hairdressers car? It should have been!

Love the headlamps but hate the color.

like blau said, they don't point right. from the side, it is very easy to see that they stick up almost a half inch. i've seen that car in person.

there have been a few attempts. one guy recently did it, but the lights are clocked wrong

another is doing it right now, but it doesn't look much better.

arktech did used to have fenders, but they haven't been heard from in a long time. also, the fenders were almost $3k

baed entirely on things i've heard about form and fit, even deutchnine is not an option

i was really motivated to do this. i had fenders here and everything. it just doesn't work out, without really changing the way the car looks, or other significant changes being made. cost is very high too. the lights alone are extremely pricey, by the time you get everything you need.

as much as this may sound like a good idea, in practice it has shown not to be.

I like the look but not all the noted problems.

"the fenders were almost $3k"

Plus I'm too cheap. It's these plus a lexan shield on the lenses for me.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I did. Definitely nowhere close to the 993 headlight look, but I didn't do it for aesthetics, I did it strictly to save weight, and to make room for brake ducting in the future. Here's what I ended up with:

I basically removed all the components of the stock headlights, including the platforms the motors sit on. Then I fabricated brackets out of aluminum to use to bolt the Hella's to the bulkhead, fabricated a set of buckets out of aluminum flashing (a very time-consuming job), and finally, I cut a couple of pieces of 1/8" lexan to the shape of the opening, and curved them by heating them in my oven until they approximately matched the curve of the fender. This was also a lot of work, but in the end, I'm happy with the result, for my use of the car, which is as a track car. If anyone is interested in the gory details of how I did it, let me know.

the latest failed attempt is from a guy on RL who is working on it now. if see the pics, note how high the fender lines now sit. might as well have used 993 fenders. completely ruins the smooth and sleek body lines of the 968 that make it unique.

also note that the headlight itself sits about 1/4" above the fender line, and the bottom of the beam is blocked by the headlight recess of the fender, which will eliminate any short range low beam effectiveness.

this is exactly what i ran into when i was looking at this, and exactly why i abandoned the project. i give the guy credit for trying, but it just isn't right. it just doesn't work on this car.
