ICESHARK BATTERY AND LIGHT CABLE SETS
#1

As many of you may be aware, a Rennlist member with the handle "Iceshark" had a cottage industry wherein he had developed kits to improve the performance of both the engine cable set and the lighting harness for both 944/968 cars. Unfortunately, when Iceshark died while on vacation, a lot of folks were denied access to these kits.

If there were enough interest out there, I would consider replicating the hardware as a hobby, much as had Dan.

To get started, I would need an example of each kit from which to begin fabrication of new kits. My request is that for anyone on this board that has one or both kits and has no intention of installing them in the immediate future, consider selling them to me. I'll take it from there.

Comments would be appreciated.

Hi Ernie-

A suggestion- perhaps you could try contacting his family and asking for his notes/paperwork in an effort to continue his work?

There may be owners out there who would be willing to part with the cables for a few weeks as well (instead of selling them).

Just some random thoughts...

Dan's sister, Betsy, posted in this thread http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...ad.php?t=251383

that she has a few of the headlight kits left and wants to clear them out. She can be reached at wraydan@msn.com

Maybe she has information on the battery cables as well.

I am certainly hope that someone can keep these excellent upgrades from being lost.

Hey guys - just ressurecting another 3yr old thread here. For those of you who don't already know, I bought the remaining inventory from Dan's family a few years ago & have been continuing on the IceShark legacy for battery cable kits & some headlight kits. Unfortunately, for the 968, the lenses are a pricey issue, so I'm not 100% sure about the future of those, but the battery kits are alive & well. Please see the other IceShark cable thread in this section of the forum for more details. I'm actually running a little special right now for $280, which includes S&H to cont US & Paypal, etc... This kit includes the entire kit, plus supplemental ground & hardware. It's highest price, right before Dan died, was $350, if one chose to use Paypal- I think some of hte materials were a bit higher then, but the $280 price is a good discount at this point & I'm hoping to keep that as the regular price for some time to come. If anyone needs anything or has any questions about any of this, please feel free to contact me... rkc951 AT yahoo.com

Thanks a lot,
Robby

Robby is being too modest here. He is a sponsor and you can find him by clicking the banner for "Higher Connections" on the index page.

From everything I have heard this is a first rate upgrade, and I will be doing it to my car, as soon as I can get around to it.

Hello Jay- glad to hear from you & thanks for the compliments! I talked with Pete the other day & am building a few sets to send to him. I meant to ask him about you, as well, but will talk to him in another day or so, as I'm almost ready to ship his out. I'm sending you a PM in a minute...

Brian- I meant to reply to your question in this thread the other night, when I found it (several of the notifications had ended up in my spam box)- I know we've e-mailed since then, but just to catch you up further, your kit has been shipped. At this point, all paid for kits (& partial kits, etc) have been shipped.

Pardon my ignorance but what are the benefits by doing this mod? Just curious as I am still trying to figure out must/should/nice-to do items on my 968.

Preventing your car from going up in a giant fireball. The insulation on the main positive cables on your car are cracking off as we speak. The other benefits are improved positive and ground cables proving better power delivery and grounding.

And you know a fire is going to happen with a user name like that...

banditsc- I love that avatar. LOL on "fire"fish...

firefish- Yes, the insulation cracking caused several underhood fires a few years ago on 944's & 951's. I know 968's are newer & most of your guys on this forum keep your cars in a great state of health, but consider that even the newest ones are now 14yrs old. If you'd like to replace partial kits & not go all out for the complete kit, I'm glad to do it & that would reduce your end price a little. Just PM me for individual needs & I'll be happy to work w/you, but please try to get your main [+] from battery to starter checked, as well as the longer of the two main [-] cable. Also, we've seen a few cracks on the main [+] from starter to alternator- this one might be tougher to check, but can still pose probs from what I've seen, even if not as likely. The other two are the worst though, as they run behind the engine bay & might be best checked by a competent mechanic. Here's a pic of a bad [+] or [-] cable- can't honestly remember which. I need to find some more pics of bad cables to throw into my collection, so if anyone has any, please let me know- I honestly thought I had more & plan to check this weekend.

Maybe your right about the name, I think I'm gonna change it to luckylotterywinner or somethingSmile

Ok, that picture<i> really</i> freaks me out! I'll schedule myselt for an under-the-hood session before driving it the next time.

How much did you say shipping to Sweden was?

If that one worries you, check out my alternator cable after I got it out and the insulation finally all cracked off. http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtop...ost&p=58894

It stabilizes your electrical system in addition to the aforementioned lessening the risk of a fire

That photo looks like a great cable compared to what mine looked like before I installed the IceShark set.

Josh- I was actually going to use your pic, but I didn't think anyone would believe it! I was wanting to ask you if it was in the car that way, or, if you had pulled it out & then scrapped the rest of the insulation afterwards... Your's is the worst one I've ever seen & is proof that Dan's oversized ExFlex to allow for pulling the Exciter & solenoid wires through, as well as a 175amp fuse on the end, were probably good ideas & ones that I did NOT want to deviate from...

Most of the time, we just see a few slight breaks in the insulation & when we bend the cable slightly, they open up more, as in the pic I posted. When the insulation is more worn, it hardens more & then can crack off in places when bending. This is really an ongoing thing that just gets worse with time & IF you have some cracks forming, it's a good idea to start thinking about a replacement b/c you just don't know when it's going to crack on open.

firefish- lol - luckylotterywinner - I'll look up Sweden here in a little while & let you know. I basically have $10 built in to that $280US price, so I would send yours for $270US + actual S&H. I think the WORST S&H outside the US I've seen so far, has been $40. On the + side, most of your dollars are worth a lot more than US dollars right now, so by comparison, you guys generally do pretty well.

On one end of that cable you can see electrical tape on it, that was the alternator side where it was raw cable after I touched the cable to replace the regulator. The rest of the insulation just flaked off as I was handling it to take it out.

If only that was the case - the US Dollar is up almost 50% in comparison with the Swedish Crown. It was 6 Crowns to the dollar this summer and now it's 9 - go figure. But a worth-the-money kit nevertheless so excpect an order as soon as I have checked the underhood status.

WOW, I'm sorry- I did not realize that. I know I sent a kit or two to Switzerland & also France, & a few other places last summer, & they were pretty happy w/the exchange rate, at the time. Unfortunately, I'm just not very knowledgable on foreign currencies. I did check on S&H & regular flat rate (always cheaper as the kits are ~8lbs) is a HAIR under $40 when paid online. So basically, your total would be $310-US for a complete kit. I know that Paypal rates cost more when I accept foreign currencies, but I'm not worried about that- it's not too bad.

I'm sending you a PM about the echange rate...

Robby,

I just got my set today. They look great!

I do have some questions:
1- The installation instructions are for a 944 and a 1986 944 turbo. Is there an photo installation instruction sheet specifically for the 968?
Has anyone on this site done a photo DIY?
2- In the kit that I have, does it have the supplemental positive cable; supplemental ground cable or the supplemental short ground?
3- Is this a DIY for an average wrench without a lift?
4- Does the intake manual and the fuel rail and all of the stuff that the instructions sheets say? If so, that is too big a job for me.

thanks
Brian
