Replacement Battery Power cables
#1

I replaced the alternator to starter cable last year.  Now I am on the hunt to replace cables coming off the battery.  Both ground and power.  Any pointers where I can source some or make some?  Length's, AWG and connector types.

found this thread, not sure if the cables are the same or not for 968.

Wallander might be talking about someone else. This is the guy I bought my Alt-Starter cable upgrade from.

Same guy - he goes by "Z3M&968" on RL - he posted this there the day before yesterday with a picture of one of his cables. Don't think he's quite back up and running yet, but should be soon.

"I shut down my website and Ebay listings in August of 2022 due to divorce. Settlement has been decreed. I look at a new property tomorrow. I will likely rebuild there. Phoenix, etc."

David and I communicate he gives me customers in Europe for alternator / starter harness, and I send him anyone in the USA that wants battery cables, as I have sent quite a few starter harness to the USA, even sent some to a motorsport place tuning a 968 or 2

And Wallander is a Swedish TV series, my handle is Waylander, which is s book by David Gemell

I hope he has made it through that mess ok

Good News! David just posted this on RL:

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

“David Cunningham here. I have returned making battery cables and alt harnesses now that my divorce has concluded. I am still renting a place and won't put my website back online until I buy a home and shop. I just set up a very small version of my shop in a couple rooms of a trailer, yet the quality is the same. Please message me through here if you need cables or a harness for your 968. Thank you.”

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

So all you slackers that haven’t replaced your deteriorating Alt-Start cables yet, now’s your chance before you suffer a “self-start” catastrophe.

I replaced my battery cables in 2015 but they were evidently sourced by my mechanic as I don't have a receipt for them. I thought they were oem. I have done a couple quick searches and find reference to the alt - start cable but nothing that tells what it is? Thanks in advance...

I wish I would have replaced the battery cables sooner.  Very happy with the result.

So many things are happier now.  Alternator isn't working as hard, active engine cooling has improved,

sensors not misreporting issues. Probably should have been the first thing I did when I got the car.

Hi Inkedup .... I'm not sure what you are asking, but if it's "what's all the fuss about" ... it is that the battery cable that goes from the battery to the starter motor can lose its insulation as it gets old and maybe rubs, and eventually shorts against the chassis.  The result is that the starter motor rotates.  If you've parked in gear your car will lurch forwards/backwards and then stop when forced to  ..... your garage door, neighbour's car, tree etc.  If ALL your cables were replaced in 2015 you should be fine, but you should check on that particular item for peace of mind.

On a not dissimilar topic .... I want to fit a "quick disconnect"  switch to my battery cable.  The car spends a lot of time unused in the garage so disconnecting the battery would probably be useful.  Any ideas before I hop onto Amazon etc, anyone use this sort of thing ....??

Roboman, just to clarify, the cable loom in question goes from the alternator to the starter motor. I assume the heat of the proximity to the engine is what dooms the insulation, especially on cars that still have their belly pans in place.

That said, David Cunningham sells a kit that is both looms. Alt-Starter and Battery+. In hindsight, I wish I’d have bought that and replaced both cables. It’s about a $40 savings over buying the two looms individually. I need to replace my ground cable as well as the connector is pretty much shot. I think I’m going to add a switch like you posted when I do. I’ve been pretty much disconnecting the ground when I put the car up for more than a couple of weeks.

eta: looks like it’s only $15 difference now.

I make the starter alternator cables but not the battery cables, while David Cunningham was having his life issues I sent loads to the USA

I have sent some to Australia and New Zealand

It was a bad batch of cables made in the Uk by a subsidiary of Ripaults,

There is no telling on which cars they ended up as LHD / RHD use the same cable
