Super-lightweight battery
#1

I ran across this on the BMW E90 - E93 forum:

For those who live in warm climates, if every last pound is important to you, this 4.5 lb (!) battery might be for you. But at $498, that weight saving had better be pretty darn important <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

That is pretty impressive. Ive got a 15lb Odyssey PC680 in my car. I think this thing weighs about the same as a 6-pack of D-Cells!!

The PC680 has lasted through the winter without issue on my friends Evo VIII in NYC. I run it from April through November on my 944..cranks a little slow in the last few weeks of November. I dont want to take any chances being stranded so i swap the old 45lb Diehard back in.

For about $250 dollars less and 1.5 pounds more you could get a Braille Carbon Fiber battery. Or for $180 for could get their "No-weight" racing battery. Not much cranking power to them though.

As lithium batteries are becoming "the" battery for power tools they will come down in price a bunch soon.

Before anybody gets too excited about this battery for their street car, you should look at the total energy storage, either Ah or reserve cranking capacity. IIRC it's not much more than a small fraction of normal for cars like ours. I didn't bother to look up the exact numbers for our cars and it's not like I did real research, and for a track car these might make sense, but even if they're reliable, they look like a sink hole for money for a daily driver.

I didn't check out the braille battery carefully but it doesn't seem obviously peculiar, and odyssey has certainly been around a while.

That would be nice. I need to start whispering sweet nothings in my current battery's positive terminal, to coax it into hanging around awhile longer while (hopefully) the price of these exotic ultra-lightweight batteries come down. I would LOVE to get one of these, and since I live in a warm climate, I don't think their lower reserve power would be a problem. I'd use one of those dash-mounted through-the-cigarette-lighter chargers whenever I parked the car, though.
