relay clicking
#1

Car sits overnight...I start it up ..no problem. Drive 5 miles to the bar. Come out 1 hour later and start it up...loud relay type clicking from passenger footwell. clicks often at first, then slows down and after 1-2 minutes, stops completely. only does it on a restart, not the first start when cold. when clicking the Car runs fine, all lights, gauges etc... work fine. This is new in the last few days and nothing done to the car electrically. I guess I could figure it out but...

Any ideas????

Anyone experience this???

xrad,

Not sure, but when I did the keyless remote addition in the pass footwell area there were 3 relays for the alarm on the same board as the computer sits on. Check them out and see if any are bad.

Here is the DIY: http://www.968forums.com/index.php?act=att...post&id=109

nice write-up silvy! yep..had to do with alarm relays...that's why car functioned OK even with relay clicking away. Seems when the alarm is set from keylock for a while, and then disarmed by opening keylock, WITH the center console lock switch unhooked(because I am working on the carpeting), the relay clicks for a few minutes. When key locks left open then car started, No clicking.

Don't really know why though...probably an open circuit/ground issue.

OK..clicking is back and it is not the alarm or ecu relays. Noise is coming from little 2x1cm box with two vaccuum lines and I think a wire plug. It is located right next to the left side of the glove box door just under the dash. you can feel it with your fingers. I thing it has something to do with the AC . When I slide both vent controls to the middle...no more clicking. Does not seem to be a vital electrical control.

Anyone have this issue??

I believe that would be the automatic climate control solenoids they have a tendency to start click when they have issues. Mine was doing that for a couple days then it went away. I believe if I turned up the temp it would go away. Trying setting your temp to the middle and see if it happens.

thanks! climate control sliders to middle position seem to solve problem. PS: I used my AC the other day...man, did it work well! icy cold!!

Mine have started clicking on cold mornings, but only for a few minutes. I notice when they click a lot, the heater blows cold air. I can't find a 2x1 cm box though, and when running it I think the clicking is coming from two gray cylinders that have a couple of rubber hoses running into them...

Any idea what these are and if replacing them is going to stop the clicking? Or is there a climate control relay somewhere else that is the problem?

You would think a clicking noise would be easy to locate, but when you're upside down with your head under the dash, the darned click sounds like it's coming from everywhere. I put my fingers on them and could feel a "click" every time I heard one, but that might be transmitted through the frame, too.

If I'm not mistaken, these little gray cylinders are actually the climate control vacuum solenoids. One is used to drive the fresh air circulation flaps, and the other is used to control the heater valve. I'm not sure yet what gives them their signal to open and close, nor why they would act funny for a few minutes on a cold morning?

For future reference, there's a good picture of the late 944 version of them at Clark's Garage, http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/hvac-01.htm, there's a reference to them (and to tightening their ground) here, http://forums.RL.com/rennforums/924-931-...e-box.html, and a very good description of the problem, from whence I first figured out they're solenoids and not relays, here http://forums.RL.com/rennforums/944-and-...944-a.html.

You'll probably have to change the RL in the last two URLs to r e n n l i s t.

In furtherance of this riveting conversation with myself, this morning I noted the following...

When the solenoids were clicking, I pressed in the "recirculate" button. The amber light on that button dimmed and extinguished in time with the clicking.

When I stopped at traffic lights, the hot air turned cold. Hmmmm...

This tells me that the mechanic did not properly refill my coolant system and bleed the air from it, and I very likely have air in my heater core. At higher RPMs the coolant is pushed through, but at idle the air bubble takes over.

I'll be venting and refilling the system and will report back any effect on the clicking. I'll probably try a method like that at Clark's Garage, http://clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/cool-02.htm.

Considering I was about a half a gallon low on coolant, I added the appropriate amount of distilled water mix and waited for the next cold morning. On the first drive there was only a moderate amount of clicking. On the second cold morning (today), there was very little clicking at all, maybe a half-dozen times as I backed out of the garage,...

Problem solved? If it comes back, so will I.
