Rear Wing Rattle
#1

I took my car in yesterday for window tint and the tech used the rear wing to open/close the hatch. No use in complaining about it (I'm sure they would deny it). Anyway, I see that it is held in with 4 screws. Well, 2 of them continue to turn with no grip (stripped). The other two seem to hold a little bit. My question is "What do they grab onto on the 2 stripped screws aren't grabbing?" If I took them all out, would I be able to get the wing back on? Maybe I just need to drive some larger screws in there?

Any help or guidance would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Travis

I think they just mount to the aluminum frame that holds the glass. Probably could tap to next thread size if needed...

Travis,

I too noticed the screw spinning around and the wing rocking a little if I wiggled it, so I first tried to see if I could get the screw to seat on something, but no, I couldn't, so rather than pull it out without knowing if I could get it in properly again, I mentioned it to the shop guy the next time I had the car in & let them have a go at it. The mechanic said that the matching nut or tapped piece is in there, but that it's pretty hard to get it lined up right. I felt OK about passing on that one.

Does any have or know of a place for a blow-up of the wing attachment with line art other detail? I'm contemplating tackling the rear wing myself but want to know what I'm getting myself into...

Thanks!

Look in the PET it shows all parts in an exploded format.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the screws that hold the top wing in place to the frame ? I suppose I can order one from Porsche but dont feel like waiting a week for the order to come in if I can just swing by a hardware store and pick one up ..

( this one which is clearly missing in the photo - )

Mine were stripped as well. I found matching stainless steel screws and locknuts at Ace hardware. No more rattles.

I don't want to high jack this thread but does any one know if the rear wing is just painted a color to match exterior, or is a painted rear wing a different wing altogether? I have the standard black and want to have it painted to match the car?

Mine is painted athracite grey, along with the frame. Don't know if it was optional or not.

If I remember correctly, and the option codes should verify this, it was an option you could order at the factory to have the rear wing painted. I think most who selected that option had it painted to match the body color.

The rear wing on the 968 I owned matched the body color, red, but was not listed on the factory options label on my car. Therefore, I knew that one of the previous owners had had the wing removed and painted. it was an excellent job, and I was

surprised when I first noticed that it was absent on my options label. I had assumed it had been done at the factory.

And of course this wasn't going to be an easy fix for me..I have no such luck. Got the correct size screw but it goes all the way in that slot without "catching" any threads, and easily falls back down. It's as if what it goes into has a much larger diameter space. But then I thought maybe I read the info incorrectly and it needs a longer screw, and that's why it wasn't catching yet. So I went back and got a longer one ( 25 mm this time ) but that had the same result ; goes all the way in but catches nothing. So now I'm thinking the wing must have a built in port where some threaded housing gizmo fits in and is glued in place, and it's that whole thing that's missing . Of course no way to see if that's the case without removing the whole wing from the hatch . Aarrrgh . Not sure I want to mess with it just because of the possible realignment issues the earlier posts mention..

Temporary fix: when every bolt I tried seemed to simply spin loosely in there and with me not really in the mood to remove the wing ( not just yet..) I used one of those dry wall thingammajiggies which expand as you tighten the screw just to test if that would make any difference . It did ! The wing is solidly held in place now, so I might just leave this temporary solution alone for a while .

I think this is the bolt for future reference M4 25mm .8

By the way, there should have been a compression nut on this bolt holding the frame to the spoiler.

So the compression nut is between the frame and wing, but exactly where ?

I fixed mine about a year ago so I don't recall exactly but I'm certain the original nut just sat there and wasn't glued. You have to remove the aluminum piece under the spoiler and the side covers to access the nut holding the spoiler. The spoiler itself has nothing threaded on it. I got locknuts with the nylon inserts so they stay put.

That's my recollection too - unattached nut that you need to secure whilst tightening the M4 bolt.

The set up goes Frame, rubber washer(For sealing), spoiler, washer, compression nut. Here's a photo of a spare spoiler I have showing the areas where the M4 bolts go. Access the area by removing the trim piece on the effected side(item #5 in the PET Drawing).
