Radio Replacement CR-1
#1

I just replaced my stock CR-1 radio and thought I'd make a quick DYI for

those who still haven't had to do theirs yet. My car had the simple six speaker

no amp system so this was rather easy.

Start by disconnecting the battery for 10min or so (don't want to set the Air Bag light)

Then pop off the trim ring around the face of the CR-1 (this come off easy)

Next remove the clock/cubby assembly (it just pulls straight out, no tools) and the ash tray

My cars an automatic so this next step is for Tips...

Unscrew the center button on the shift lever and pull the handle straight up

and off (best to do this neutral or drive and avoid damaged knuckles)

Remove the four phillps screws (two under ash tray and two under the clock)

Lift up the center trim panel and carefully unplug the switches (

watch the order, they can plug in any of the switches)

Now to remove the radio move the lock pins on the side of the unit to the

center of the latch and pull it out (it's tight but it will come out), then just unplug all the connectors

To remove the carrier from the dash use a small screwdriver to bend the "fingers" in to the center of the carrier, there are two larger tabs bent over on the sides (don't forget these) and pull straight out

Time to install...

I didn't want to cut wires so I just used crimp on plugs and electrical tape. The power

and such was straight forward (white plug) just had to trim a couple spades to fit the

car side plug but the speaker plugs (round plugs) needed custom work. As you can see

from the pic the + side is round and - side is flat, for the round one I cut half of a

female connecter off and reshaped it around one of my picks so it fit very tight on the male end

Wiring info...

Alarm wire = leave this unplugged

Antenna = piggy back this with the 12v Key on

Speaker = the flat blade is (-) round is (+) or Blk stripe is (-)

Spaeker plugs

Cage "fingers"

Radio lock and tab

Me too, I just thought it was part of the procedure............"oh s***!, scraped my finger again!" No sweat, soon it will be time for the "beer break" reward at the end. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I wonder if it's because I wrote it in Word 2003 first then cut and pasted to the forum then added the pics.

Fixed (I hope <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

I've benefitted so much from this forum (thanks guys), I think it's time for me to contribute.

After few years of searching, I've finally found a perfect candidate for my radio replacement, JVC KD-NX5000 (recently released). This is a 1-DIN HDD AM/FM/CD/DVD/GPS/Music Server that's Bluetooth & i-Pod capable.

I know this is too much of a gadget for adding tunes between your spirited drives, but if you need a

built-in GPS for the group drive like I do, this is pretty much the only choice for 924/944/968 today,

because flip-up screen units will interfere with the knee pad.

If anybody decides on this one, I suggest:

1) Cover the two large bottons with some transparent sheet before you scratch with your fingers,

Poor design/material selection on JVC's part, but any scratch really shows through illumination.

2) Wiring Diagram available upon request here.

Here's how it looks after installation:

That looks nice, I like the fact that the screen don't pop out (just more to break)

Quick question - what speaker wire colors match up with the deck speaker wire colors - want to make sure FR and LR are correct.

Thanks,

Ben

PS - I'm looking at the speaker wire positive and negative mismatched in the photo description above...

Hey Flash - want to check on another point - should I plug in the antenna booster cable from the radio into the antenna slot on the white plug harness in the car or piggyback that to the 12v key plug as suggested in the DIY?

Another question - the amp wire from the radio - just leave that unplugged?

Never installed a radio before

power the antenna booster from the antenna power wire (usually the blue wire coming from the deck)

Thanks Flash - install went perfect - worked on the first try.

The stock speakers are damn good! The whole install took about 2 hours.

Guys, forgive me for bringing forward this *ancient* thread, but it's the most applicable to my upcoming project - eg. the installation of a new stereo/NAV unit to replace my dead-stock Porsche CR-1 six-speaker system (just like shown above).

I've been searching the internet for two hours, and the forums here, and even chatting with a useless Crutchfield rep. (Crutchfield does not have a full harness, but they do have those double-DIN connectors).

So does the stock system somehow feed all six speakers from just four DIN connectors? If so, I'll order two pair from Crutchfield (or someone) and minimize the cutting I have to do to the wiring?

I also wish the photos above showed the back of the stereo so I could tell if I need one of those special Porsche antenna cable adapters too, like I did with my 944S? Does anyone know?

I see this DIY was to be pulled, is the photo now corrected above?

EDIT: Well, I double-checked and the photo is not correct, but it's not polarity that is wrong AFAIK, it's the fact that the +12V Constant and +12V Ignition Key posts are reversed. Which makes sense, the little wire is used just to keep the stereo's memory refreshed, and the big wire is used to run everything when the key is turned on.

These wires, BTW, are not very big considering how much stuff is in a double-DIN unit these days.

If you are going to install a 2DIN satnav, I can email you the pdf that I posted on this site.

I'm doing it as we type - the center console is out of the car, all of the speaker connections are soldered and shrink-wrapped, and now I'm puzzling over whether or not the "ILLUMI" wire needs to be connected to anything. [Image: wink.gif]

Oh, and to augment what I said above, I pinned out the +12V to verify it, and then when I flipped over the old stereo, there was a pin-out of the connector on the bottom of it. [Image: rolleyes.gif]

I decided to cut all the old 2-pin DIN connectors and the 6-spade connector off the old non-functioning CR-1, and I'm reusing those.

OH, and if you posted it, I probably have it and was already too stupid to refer to it - I'll go check my downloads now... [Image: smile.gif]

UPDATE: Yes, I have it, but I filed it under AVIC, so I missed it - I'll read up and see if I can figure it out. Any advice would *still* be appreciated, even if it was only moral support. [Image: biggrin.gif]

UPDATE UPDATE: I'm an idiot. Of course I'll use the clock lamp wire to connect to the ILLUMI wire on the Kenwood.

Everything that's purely electrical is wired up and it appears to be functioning, although the first screen that comes up is "Security Code", so not I get to figure that out. [Image: dry.gif]

I ordered a trim ring as well, as that was missing.

Tomorrow I start to carve up the console and the bottom mount to make it fit a double-DIN unit.

UPDATE: Code sorted - radio works <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
