Old Radio removal
#1

I pulled the trim cover plate off the CD-2 original stereo yesterday and tried to figure out how to use the 2 DIN tools that crutchfield sent me. (I've never done this before). I assume that the CD-2 has brackets on each side attached to the radio that lock into the sleeve. I'm guessing the locations of where to use the DIN tool. There seems to be a location at all 4 outside corners and between each set (L/R) there is some kind of a slider as you can see in the photos. Any pointers on how to get this out for a newbee?

I think that when you push the tool in it pushes up the sliders and the radio comes right out. or, you can remove the trim bracket and then use a screwdriver to just slide up the locking pins into the "free" central area and then tug the radio out. Its as easy as it seems.

Off topic, but congrats on the new Cayman S! That is one phenomenal, thoroughbred machine. There was a lot of chatter in the automotive press when the new Nissan 370Z first came out that it offers about as much car as the Cayman, for a lot less money. But in the comparison tests I've seen, the Cayman utterly blows the Z, which is a very fine car in its own right, completely into the weeds. On the flip side, you'd have to spent A LOT more money (well into six figures) to get a car that tops the Cayman S. Enjoy!

Kim is mostly right...but it's only easy if you have three hands! There are locking pins in the center (vertically) of section of the two mounting tabs. They must be held in the "up" position while sliding the radio out of it's sleeve. All of factory radios I've removed required a bit of trickery, but that's 'cause the locking pins wouldn't stay up - they just kept back down. Once you get it out, you'll think it's easy.

caffine,

I replaced my CD-2 last year and got the same DIN tools from Crutchfield. I could not figure out how to use them either. I don't think they work for this stereo.
As Darryl and Kim said, just push up the part of the locking mechanism with the pin so that it comes free and you can slide out the stereo. I echo the fact that it is difficult to keep the pin from sliding back down and re-latching.
The best technique I found was to put your hand into the slot below the radio where the storage compartment and clock were (I see you have them removed in the picture) and push the CD-2 from the back while moving the pins.
You may need to push the CD-2 back into the dash initially to free up the pins.
Pushing from the back allows you to move the unit easier with one hand, and when it moves a little, you should be able to get the pins to stay in the "free" area.
This explanation may only make sense once you have gotten the stereo out, but as Darryl said, "Once you get it out, you'll think it's easy!"
Let us know if you need clarification.
From the picture, it looks like the locking pins on your CD-2 are already free, but I could be wrong. If so, it's just a matter of pushing the stereo out of the DIN slot. Mine did not slide very easily and required some force. This is another reason to try pushing it from the back so you don't break anything by pulling on it.
Please keep us posted on your progress.

Since you are working with tools from Crutchfield, I assume you're doing an upgrade.
I'd love to know what you have planned.
My upgrade is still a work in progress.
Are you starting with the 10 speaker option in your car?

Ok - so its the slider that is the locking mechanism. I've Tried the holding the sliders all the way up and trying to pull it out... didn't move. Since they are gravity locks - then I assume full up is ok to unlock.

Jamie // I currently have the 6 speaker base system. I picked up a single DIN sized JVC unit that came out this year - had pretty much had what I was looking for:
HD-radio built-in, 20wrms, equalizer, and a front mount USB port...it has bluetooth optional..but I have a tendency to ignore the phone while in the car anyway so don't know that I'll ever implement that
usually just the wife giving me another honey-do item. It doesn't have any NAV features but with my DD having NAV, & my cellphone having NAV and the fact I live in a tiny town I had no use for NAV in my "fun" car. Hence I didn't even consider any with NAV - so I got it for less than 200.

I plan to replace the head and see how it sounds. We already have some new/unloved infinities reference series in a couple of different sizes - my son decided against using after totaling his first car a few years ago -- I may try and throw them in later.

All // Thanks for all the help - its a pain when you know something should be easy but for some reason just isn't. Cheers.

No, I think the middle is unlock...as Jamie mentioned, stick your hand behind it and push a little. I seem to remember getting one side pushed out a tad while unlocking the other side and working back and forth is necessary. It'll come.

Yeah middle was it. Out now. Still required alot of pull to get it to slide out.

Thank you to all.
