Thanks Joe,

It was not too hard and the rewards are tremendous.

It will bring this '90's car into this era; plus it is a major improvement in the sound with OEM speakers!

And you won't have to ask directions ever again!

I'm late to the game, but that is COOL! Where did you upload the screen to?

You burn a CD with the screen and in the setup menu you will find a menu that allows you to change the backgrounds. One of the choices is import from cd, or something like that.

I recently added the Kenwood DNX5220BT into 'Lady P', and am well impressed with the upgrade to the sound of the 'stock' 10 speaker install, just grabbed off ebay, a stand alone Pioneer 150 Watt Sub woofer to full in the low end, as the Kenwood unit has a stack of Eq, and X-over options to 'tune' the sound. Well happy!

Heres a couple of Pics....

And Two.. the unit itself! lol

Very impressive Brian.
Thanks for the great documentation!

How did you know this unit would fit in the "double DIN" slot?
The lower slot in our cars is not a full DIN space due to the narrowing at the back bottom (i.e. the shape of the clock/storage insert).
Anything Double DIN on Crutchfield indicates it will not fit.

The AVIC-D3 doesn't seem to be available on the Crutchfield site, so I wasn't able to see if this unit is more shallow than the others.
Is this unit unique or does the removal of the bracket, as shown in your write-up, free up the necessary space for any double DIN unit?

nope - i went with a JVC unit that was a single DIN with nav - had to add a LOT of other stuff though to get all the features i wanted and STILL didn't get as good of a nav system as the pioneer

maybe it will stay - maybe it won't

So Brian and sstman were able to make the double DIN AVIC-D3 and Kenwood DNX5220BT fit.
Anybody else have a double DIN installation?
Any fit issues with the back-bottom interference on the lower DIN slot?

I just put in the Avic F700bt double din. http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/10/20/2...00BT/index.html

fits fine. Little snug on the back end for the wiring, but it all fits. Don't forget to get the install kit http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-ADTVA133-Ins...9277&sr=1-1 I forgot to get that my first order and wondered how to get this thing to fit right. Now it fits perfect and looks great.

I will get some pictures up sometime soon.

Jamie,
You are welcome.
No site will say that any 2 din fits because they are assuming stock not modifying the car.
Check the dims pf the AVIC D3 and compare. The unit is right up to the limit, but it all fits with all plugs installed. The rear cage piece does not fit, as I showed in the write-up. With the bracket in, nothing will fit...take it out.
Measure the one you want to install against the D3 that I installed and if = or smaller you are set to go.
I must say that it the most contemporary mod that I have done, you will feel like you are in a newer car that 1995!
Plus, in many areas you can't talk on the cell using your hands and the bluetooth connection to the stereo system is awesome!

Brian,

Where did you mount your microphone and the GPS?

I looked up the D3 on the Panasonic web site (wasn't on Crutchfield) and pulled the dimensions from the installation manual.

So, for anyone else looking to upgrade, the benchmark max dimensions looks to be<b> 7" X 4" X 6.5"</b>

Thanks again Brian.
I only wish I had seen this post sooner. I just assumed that double DIN would not fit in the space available, but I think your suggestion is right on target; that the small mods necessare are what results in the "does not fit" indication on the Crutchfield website.

Now I have to rationalize replacing the low tech Blaupunkt stereo I added just 6 months ago...

I'm hoping someone else coming to Hershey this weekend has a similar set-up that I can see in person.

Brain, very impressive setup again. I do like your "wood" trim. I have the same thing in my 95. I have been contemplating some type of upgrade to my system. Not into Ipods, bluetooth or GPS (have a garmin). My music tastes are very narrow as I really on listen to classical music. I do have a Pioneer 12 disc changer in the rear. I used to work for Pioneer. Right now my problem is the only classical music station comes and goes. Suspect an antenna problem.

Just realized I called you "Brain". Actually with that installation, I think it fits.

The mic is at the top of the gauge cluster. Top dead center.
The GPS antenna is on the top center of the dash where it meets the window.

Flattering, but you'd be surprised how many valentines I got in school spelled that way.
Thank you for the complement.

did you use the lead wire to measure your speed? Saw the e brake connection but didn't notice the other 2 in the write up.

the VSS wire is not needed to determine speed, it is done by position change over time.
what do you mean by the other 2?
the VSS is a single wire, all other connections were made.

I was reading over the install manual and they stress more then once to attach that lead for an accurate GPS reading. Have you found the avatar representing your car to be behind or in front of a turn when the turn is right there?

I read over your DIY and the Pioneer install manual and I mixed up a couple of things (I understand your DIY was not focusing on the wiring as you stated). The 3 connections I noted that are different from a typical stereo install were:

1. SPEED EXTENSION LEAD (PINK)
2. REVERSE EXTENSION LEAD (VIOLET) I believe this is only for a reverse cam install.
3. PARKING BRAKE (light Grn)

Was curious if you connected all 3.

The avatar is slightly ahead. Maybe 5-10 feet without the VSS, pink lead.
Yes, I ran the reverse , purple lead to the reverse lights in the rear of the car. See frame #1 of my DIY.
Yes, I ran the parking break, light green wire to the correct spot in order to allow all functions while moving.
