Part of this story is on the "sound system upgrade" thread, but it was suggested I start a new one so here it is :
A few weekends ago I drove down to SoCal with a 24 lbs , 9 sheet box of Dynamat Extreme ( Amazon.com has it available from various sources for around $ 140 to $ 160.. which is by far the cheapest price I could find anywhere ), and while there, Flash, the man whose generosity never seems to have boundries spent the better part of his Friday slicing and piercing his fingers, straining his back muscles, to install the sheets inside my doors, in the rear speaker spaces where he also shot foam and further insulated the area with some filler
( pretty sure it's asbesthos he removed from his attic, but we'll leave that alone for now for a few years until I experience pulmonary symptoms ).
And I did contribute a bit by placing sheets in the trunk area and the side cubbies spaces, but that was the easy work.. BTW, we used 7 out of the 9 sheets and covered most everything that could be covered with it..
It is important to note, nothing was changed - same factory speakers, same head unit I had put in ( Blaunkput Heidelberg ), same factory amp, etc.. And now I will say this much: WOW !!
The difference in the sound quality and power coming directly inside the cabin, as opposed to being difused while bouncing off and around every hollow space and off the body's sheet metal, is friggin' amazing. Not only can I now play everything at half the volume level as I had previously done to get the same result, but I hear every note, every nuance of the tunes.. just as they were intended to be reproduced - I'm driving with a concert hall inside my car ! Can't say enough about the difference this made. Worth every penny !
Here are some photos of the work in progress and the finished rear area..
