Front speaker replacement
#21

Hi, I'm about to do the same replacement as caffine (only my choice are being Focal Polyglass 130 component speakers). I would like to know if anyone did some modification of the door itself? My local car audio shop is recommending to install kit like Dynamat Xtreme Door Kit for example. Any experience with it? Is it worth the effort?

Hi folks,

after researching for months, I am currently in the final planing phase for my front door speaker setup. I will do the modification in my vacation next month. As everybody knows, the big issue is that the door is not sealed due to the air vent. To get real clean sound from the woofer and some kicking bass you need to create a sealed enclosure in the door. Installing a big door board was a no-go for me. I want to keep the original look. This is the plan:

- increase the hole in the door panel below the armrest so that it fits the opening of the metal door body behind
- build a small GFK bowl which fits into this opening (as deep as possible taking into account the window lift)
- reinforce the plastic panel with GFK, dynamite extreme and a metal ring
- mount the plastic panel and seal it as good as possible
- put crossover network outside door not to waste space
- fill the speaker housing with wool
- reinforce the door panel with dynamite extreme

With this setup you can get a sealed enclosure of 3.5l. I researched on the speaker parameter of many high-quality speakers to find some which fit to 3.5l: Andrian A130 or Audio System HX 130 SQ. Unfortunately both companies are German, but the Andrian's are really excellent and many Germans retrofit them into their Porsche.

Comments are welcome. I will keep you posted.

Greats from Munich

Regarding reattaching the L type brackets that hold up the door arm handle - I attached a small piece of double-sided foam tape onto the L bracket to "join" the bracket & door handle - this greatly simplified the install process - to about1 minute per door handle.

the double-sided foam tape was the type that is used to hold up pictures <= 1 lb.

Caffine,
We never got a report on how the system sounds.
I'm curious on your impressions of a few things, since I have been in the middle of a stereo upgrade for almost a year now and I am finally ready to buy my new front speakers.

I like the Infinity Kappa speakers that you installed because they have a relatively low crossover frequency and put a lot of frequency content up in the tweeter location vs. under the armrest.
On the down side, your stare angle is straight ahead due to the large size of the tweeter.
The alternative is a comparable speaker with smaller tweeters that can be angled, but with a higher crossover.
What are yout thoughts?
