Anyone know if the fronts (6 spkr) woofer can take top mount speaker depth: 2-7/16" ? Looking at some nice 5 1/4"components for the front and before I pull the trigger wanted to check.
Do I need remove the entire door panel to replace the speakers?

you don't need to remove the entire panel to change the woofer

not sure about the depth though - the magnet diameter will play into this - i know the infinity 5012i fit, but was close - look that up for dimensions for reference (pardon the pun)

I believe the top mount depth for the 10 speaker system is 2 1/4 inches. Not sure about the 6.
I'd suggest taking the bottom trip piece off your door and measuring it before pulling the trigger.
The trim piece I'm refering to includes the speaker grill and the carpeted pocket on your door. It comes off with about 7 screws around the bottom and front edges. Only takes a minute or two. Then you can pop out the woofer with 4 screws (I have the 10 speaker set-up, but the 6 speaker one must be similar) and measure all dimensions.
Crutchfield has the best info on their site, with scanned copies of owner and install manuals. Suggest you also measure the cutout dimensions and mounting hole locations to figure out how well the new speakers will fit. Crutchfield also has an amazingly good return policy if you get them and they don't fit.

When you replace the tweeter, you will likely need to remove the door panel. Some have said you can get to the tweeter by just removing the window control switch panel, so you can try that first, depending on your plan for replacing the tweeter. The originals are an unusual size. Do you plan to keep the original tweeters, mount the new ones using some sort of bracket to make them fit the existing hole, cut out the inside of the existing tweeter and insert the new ones, or have you found a speaker that actually fits the existing opening?

Now that I understand how to get the woofer out I will go ahead and " take the bottom trip piece off your door and measuring it before pulling the trigger." - as you said Jamie.

I'd haven't committed to any particular speakers ...yet. But I do want to use components in the front doors.... So all tweeters in components spkrs are various sizes...great.
Guess I'll be attempting to measure its current size as well. I plan to change the rear 4x6"'s out in the future with whatever "fits" without too much trouble ... preferring they focus more on mid-bass ( 5.25" or 6.5" fit?) then treble being behind the seats and in an open air car......but for now one thing at a time - now that the weather is nicer the wife has plans for my "free time" - and I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve me working on or driving the 968. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif[/img]

I just got new door knobs from Sunset in the mail - so I guess I'll need to pull the door panel. For the tweeter I'll first attempt the door locking trim method as suggested just so I know how to do it - course it probably needs to come off first for a panel removal anyway.

Let me know what you end up doing with the tweeters. I'm in the middle of a stereo upgrade myself, but haven't decided on the front speakers.
My current plan is to cut out the interior of the existing tweeter and put a new driver into the shell of the old one.
If you find a new tweeter that fits well in the existing opening, I'd like to know [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img]
Of course, my free time is also directed elsewhere right now too. (have rented some earth moving equipment to put in a new sidewalk this weekend... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif[/img] )

I actually appreciate the opportunity to give back a bit on the car interior stuff. Having lived in this car for the past 14 years as a DD, I've taken most of the interior apart several times. It's the engine and drivetrain stuff that scares me. I don't have the auto repair experience, and am always scared to tinker with things that can break and strand me for a week while I wait for parts. Though I've been pushing the envelope lately with the help of this forum.
Maybe the novelty has worn off for some, but I am still in awe of the ability to tap into the collective experience of this forum community. I love telling people how some dude from Johannesburg gave me a shortcut for replacing my door handle seals and wait for them to say "South Africa? [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif[/img] "

I finally got around to pulling the door speaker cover off - it was 7 screws - mine had 2 already missing. Discovered a mid-range and 5" papercone woofer under the cover. The woofer is 2 5/16 depth.

FYI,
I found my notes on the speaker sizes, and the tweeter mounting hole is 2 3/16 diameter.
The hole has two notches that fit corresponding flanges on the tweeter for alignment on installation.
The notches are 180 degrees apart and the diameter at that point is 2 1/2 inches.

I ended up going with a set of Infinity kappa components with a 5.25" woofer and a textile dome tweeter. Both speakers are rated 2 ohm and 93dB efficiency. The tweeter came with many install options but did not provided a suitable trim plate that would cover the existing 'indented' door panel from the original tweeter. So I dremeled out the center of the original tweeter and pushed the new tweeter in its place. It's a very tight fit. Hence it will be a flush mount & fixed position (with the stare angle pretty much straight ahead). Gonna leave it as a compression only mount. I found half of the screw mounting points on the plastic woofer mount were gone so I patched them using fiberglass cloth. Replacing the door knobs while I have the door panels completely removed as the originals were a bust. Will wire up tomorrow & give it a listen. Oh, I got-em off of amazon for about $130 delivered (509cs) Gotta love amazon & the discounts.

I was gonna try & replace the rear 4x6's as well - but it appears the Design 1 Chassis Brace I installed earlier this year needs to be removed or really loosened up so the rear side panels can be completely removed - as I can only get them partly removed now.

Here's the new tweet inserted into original tweet mount... very tight fit

Regarding - putting it all back together - How the heck?????? --- the L type brackets that go through the door panel and hold up the door arm handle -- any tricks to getting them re-attached?

Regarding reattaching the L type brackets that hold up the door arm handle - I attached a small piece of double-sided foam tape onto the L bracket to "join" the bracket & door handle - this greatly simplified the install process - to about1 minute per door handle.

the double-sided foam tape was the type that is used to hold up pictures <= 1 lb.
