Radiator Options
#1

Hi from the UK.

I need a new radiator for my 968 Sport. It's been on backorder with Porsche UK since last September and still no ETA.

Hella/Behr versions are getting very hard to find and are increasingly expensive (scarcity value...?). Aftermarket options that seem to be available are NRF and Ava Cooling but I can find little real-world info on these. Could I use a 944 S2/944 turbo rad?

Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Unfortunately Flash burned thru most of the remaining OEM supply of radiators.

There are some on EBay though.

Thanks Bandit,

Yes, importing from the US certainly is an option. The $200+ in shipping and taxes is a consideration however - but certainly useful as a backstop.

As I mentioned in my post, aftermarket versions are available in the UK - from NRF and AVA (which is Haugg Germany) - just can't find any info on their radiators actually in use. All I have to go on at present is my local specialist classic car radiator repairer/restorer who says NRF are good - but then he's an NRF distributor....

Hi Waylander,

GR8 - Just the kind of feedback I was hoping for! I trust the rad is working well for you?

I'll give your idea a try - not so sure about the pleading tho'...

I've tried all the usual parts suppliers in the UK. Some have NRF available (some at fair prices some at silly money), some say they're on backorder at NRF Holland, some say NRF don't make 'em anymore. After Bandit's suggestion I tried eBay UK and yep, NRF rads are available. The cheapest is a company with the 'un-confidence-inspiring' name of 'Mister Auto' who apparently ship them out of Brussels.

Anywhoo, I now feeling somewhat more encouraged.

Thanks again

It cost me £196.00 plus VAT shipped for free arrived next day.

it came from NRF but was made by LRO exactly the same as what came out of the car minus the bowed bottom and the leak

You can trust Mister-Auto, I ordered parts there more than once, never had any problems. Most of the times their pricing is cheap compared to other suppliers. Just this one time they thought my cam chain looked like a Clio waterpump, but they sent me the right stuff afterwards without any hassle.

Hi Phillipe,

I was really hoping you would chime in! I think of you as Mr Europe 968 - and, in this particular case, you being based in Brussels (if I recall correctly) is pretty-near perfect.

It's great to hear that Mister-Auto is trustworthy - their prices are very attractive.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Apologies, Philippe -  not Phillipe!

Lol, Mr Europe 968? That is waaay too much credit Sam, too much competition from the Dutch I'm afraid :-)

I don't live in Brussels, but in Merksplas, a small town near the Dutch border. I even believe Mr Auto is a Dutch company.

Cheers!

Just a simple case of praise where praise is due.

Hey, I used to be self-effacing too but gave it up because I wasn't very good at.

Saxophone music ok, even eurotrash club attire is ok, but please, oh please.. no speedos swimwear !! Besides, " Mr Europe 968 " , and undoubtedly " Mr Universe 968 " title does belongs to the Dutch . ( Our lowlands member may be down to owning ONLY eight 968s by now, but with a former stable of eleven of them I believe no one ever has, or ever will even come close to that )

Back to the radiator topic though : are these almost NLA parts in the U.S. also ? I remember about a year ago having problems ( well, flash was doing the search ) locating a radiator for my car. Not sure if it was just a matter of not being " on the shelf / in stock " at local dealers and we lucked out in locating one not too far away, or if it's an item which now can only be ordered from a single source and requires a long wait to get it ..??

That would suck - there are various NLA parts which can be substituted with VW or Audi products, but the radiator is probably very 968-specific . Unless the 944s or 951 radiator is identical ?

pretty sure 951 (except maybe on the tip).  only the suffix number is different (05 for the manual 968 vs 03 for the 951)

The water line for the turbo is blanked off on the 968 rad, but other than that they are the same

I would wonder where Ed the mechanic on the TV show, "Wheeler Dealers" is located. They always have creative places to find parts or shops that rebuild the existing parts in the UK for their projects. Maybe if you stopped by Ed might tell you the name of some of those places.
