Front Brake Pads: Vibration Dampers and Damping Plates
#1

Just discovered that the squeal in my front brakes is being caused by a lack of vibration dampers and/or damping plates. Thanks to my usually trusty local Porsche mechanic, bless his heart, he replaced the pads but forgot the dampers. Question: Do I need both the vibration dampers AND the damping plates? I have PET on my home PC, so I can see the exploded diagram w/ part numbers, but the "vibration damper for caliper" has M 030 under model. My car is non- M 030. However, I am hoping someone out there has done this job before and can tell me for sure. Also, there are 2 part numbers for damping plates, which one do I need?

Well, it depends...you either have the ones that have "humps" and the humps fit into the caliper pucks, or you have the other kind which are just flat plates.

If they're stock 968 brakes then get the ones with "humps". I just did my pads two weeks ago and that's what I had to use.

OK, do you know what part number it was? Are they the round things, one for each piston, with a little gear looking thing on the end or are they the rectangular flat shims, one for each side of the caliper? My brakes are stock.

"the round things, one for each piston, with a little gear looking thing on the end"

that's what mine were - Sorry, I threw the bag with the part number away. You can call 210-657-1111 and ask for Kathy. Ask her for the part numbers for the shims for Michael Sorbera's 968. She's a parts guru and has them memorized...

DAK,

I am getting ready to do a brake job and I have the part numbers.

The flat round black pieces that have a gear looking thing attached to them are 964-352-096-00. Use 4 per wheel.

Wear contact sensors are 944-612-365-01.

If by "humps" you're referring to the backing plates with 2 metal discs that fit into the piston holes, these would only be the case for a 968 equipped with M030 (928S4) front brakes. Otherwise you'll need the adhesive dampener discs instead.

I recently replaced the pads and dampeners on a friend's early 968 and the calipers were plain jane early 951 or 944S2 brakes. Same calipers and pads, and 16 dampeners in 4 different sizes.

OTOH, my 951 has the backing plates with the humps in the front M030 brakes.

my non-M030 car had both backing plates (little shim plates) and spring cups stuck to them - they were original pads when i got the car at 22k with full records too, so no chance of somebody inserting them

Those were dampeners (964.351.096.01, etc.) stuck to your old pads, not M030 backing plates. The backing plates (951.351.089.03) have solid metal discs and can be reused, the adhesive dampeners with springs cannot.

i went back and looked and i see the diference on the front calipers of the M030 - it is a single piece dual puck plate, as opposed to the plate with 2 different sized spring units stuck onto it, as is used on rear M030, and both ends of the non-M030
