Rebuilding the front control arm
#1

I have found a few posts about rebuilding the 944 front control arms by replacing the ball joints with a kit out of the internet. I haven't found much about the control arms of the 968. Can they be rebuilt? Where can I find the ball joint repair kit?

I haven't done it, but my understanding is that they are not rebuildable. Unless... you have machine work done on the control arms to modify them for rebuilding. I recommend contacting Pete at RS Barn - he knows what is required.

Depending on the machining work I may be able to get it done. I will contact Pete, thanks.

Vertex Auto (vertexauto.com) sells rebuilt control arms, but I guess that doesn't mean it's rebuildable by the average Joe.

I need the driver's side control arm (944 341 027 02). I found the needed part at 5-6 websites that sell OEM Porsche parts, but when I called them, none had it in stock. Moreover, they informed me that 944 341 027 02 is no longer available and that it was superseded by 944 341 927 31. The full price for this new part is ~$1050. They also said that because that was a new part, Porsche recommended replacing both control arms at the same time. Pretty expensive.

Does anybody have experience with rebuilt control arms? Like from Vertexauto or other places? I am looking for some input to decide if it is worth to look into the rebuilt ones.  Thanks.

The 944 arms were rebuild possible, but the 968 arms require some serious engineering to rebuild, they have to be machined to accept a different fitting

We had one company in the UK that rebuilt them, now no longer, I think part works in Germany make them still

Mine are still in perfect condition after 160,000 miles not sure what wears them out, just sitting around ?

I have planned to change mine in the near future, just for peace of heart...

Partworks.de in Germany sells them for around €250,00 each, but you have to send the old ones back in return.

In my case, the one that failed, had a torn boot.

Does anybody know if the 944 control arm fits the 968? I know that the 968 arm has a side bracket that the 944 does not, but about the mounting dimensions and overall fitting? My car is stock and I only do street driving.

Yes they are the same dimensions as the last turbos and S2 I have been told, only difference is no mounting for the air guide

I rebuilt my S2 control arms without much difficulty. If they are one of the many "changes" between S2 and 968, ie essentially the same component, the get a duff S2 and measure it all up/compare. The air pipe guide is not really an issue unless authenticity is a question. Good luck.

S2 arms with the Renbay kit not a real nightmare, but the joints on the 968 arms are completely different

They have to be machined and a splined joint with circlips fitted, no groove for the clip

i think the whole ball joint with its housing can be pressed out and replaced,  but there is  no replacement part

The rubber bushing on the rear of the control arm mount is looking pretty bad.  I have not yet determine if ball joints are ok or not.   Is replacing the rubber rear mount a big ordeal?  Or is it just the rubber bushings pressed into both ends of the control arm? Looking for a recommendation on how to proceed wisely.    See photo.

You can remove the rear castorblock withoutout removing the control arm  , the excentrinc bolt , might have some rust and can be bit of a hassle to remove .

you wil need alingment after replacing , at least i would .

That's not so difficult a part to find and install:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/395226668287?it...SwPdZl4-Vt

But, if that one has perished, then probably the other bushings on the control arm too. Those are really best to use a hydraulic press if you have one.

However, the real question is how are the ball joints? For spares, we have some 951 (944 turbo) control arms and a kit to replace the ball joints. The 968 arms are not available and rebuilding them is not something easily done with normal home garage tools.
