Replacing front brakes
#1

So my front rotors are shot and I am looking at replacing them with the Zimmermann R4-S combo since the Zimmermann's are on sale right now at Autohausaz. They are $114.50 + free shipping. Here is my question, is it ok to replace the fronts and do the rears later? The car is only driven in sunny weather and in WA that is pretty rare (about 3K miles a year if that). Thanks for the help!

There is a minimum thickness the rotors should have. If they are at or near the minimum and the pads are at the wear limit, replace both. If the rotors are still ok, just replace the pads if needed. Flash warns for noise and chatter when using new R4-S pads on used rotors though.

Normally you can find the minimum thickness on the rotors somewhere. The pads would have a groove in them to show the wear limit.

Yep I read that from Flash too. I am going to replace the front rotors and pads together just not sure if the increased braking power up front will mess with the rears running stock for a while.

Paragon Products has Zimmerman front rotors at $85 each right now.  Also order the "brake pad wear sensor" wires at the same time, you'll probably break the old ones removing them - $9.50 ea at Paragon. You can get by with holding on the rears if they aren't bad, generally 2x life on the rears from the fronts, if the old rotors aren't badly worn and you don't drive that hard..  You also have to pack and adjust the front wheel bearings when you change the front rotors. R4-S pads seem to be in favor right now, that's what I have ordered.  Not sure I'll get it done before Tahoe, but current ones aren't that bad for a little while longer.

Fix it fast, Tahoe is in 3 weeks!

Covington, been there before, have a brother in Seattle area. He rarely sees the sound thru the fog... :whine:

Just received some goodies and I know what I will be doing next week! Now I am just waiting for the plug wires and a Stage 1 chip from RS Barn. It's going to be a fun summer.

It will be more fun after you get all these new toys installed.
